Speaker of the 12th Parliament Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth says he is not intimidated by alleged spiritual attacks against him, claiming that some individuals are attempting to harm him through witchcraft.

Speaking during his first public appearance in West Budama Central, his Constituency , since assuming office as Speaker of the 12th Parliament, Oboth-Oboth became emotional as he reflected on his journey from a humble background to becoming one of the country’s top leaders.

The Speaker attended a church confirmation service at Muwafu Primary School in Tororo District on Sunday, where hundreds of residents gathered to welcome him home.

The service, presided over by the Bishop of Bukedi Diocese, Rt Rev Samuel Bogere Egessa, turned into a homecoming celebration for Oboth-Oboth, who said he was deeply moved by the reception from his constituents.

Although he arrived in Tororo on Friday, the Speaker said he avoided a public procession due to security concerns related to the Ebola outbreak and the large crowds expected to receive him.

“I stayed in Tororo until around 9pm to avoid a procession, but when I reached home, I found people waiting. We had prepared food, but some refused to eat. They were just dancing and crying with joy,” he said.

Oboth-Oboth said his rise to the Speakership was only possible through divine intervention, recalling his childhood and education journey.

“I scored aggregate seven and was the second-best student in the district. My parents, being peasants, could not afford to take me to Majasi High School. To see someone like me become Speaker of Parliament can only be God’s doing,” he said.

The Speaker then addressed what he described as attempts by some people to bring him down through witchcraft, saying such efforts would not succeed.

“They want me dead. Parliament’s juju will not scare me. Those involved in such acts should stop. I believe I am God-made. Those who have tried have failed and will continue to fail,” Oboth-Oboth said.

The remarks come as the new Speaker continues to push a message of accountability and reform at Parliament, where he has repeatedly promised to promote integrity and fight corruption.

During the West Budama gathering, Oboth-Oboth also urged leaders in Tororo and the wider Bukedi region to intensify efforts against corruption, warning that local malpractice undermines national development.

“Tororo and Bukedi should not be associated with corruption in district offices or the sale of jobs. We must maintain a clean background as we fight corruption nationally,” he said.

He added that corruption continues to affect service delivery in sectors such as health, education and infrastructure.

In his sermon, Bishop Samuel Bogere Egessa warned that corruption had become deeply rooted in society and was affecting public services.

“When health centres lack drugs, schools are understaffed, and roads are impassable, these are signs of corruption,” the Bishop said.

He also called for accountability in government programmes, including the Parish Development Model (PDM), warning against exploiting beneficiaries.
Oboth-Oboth also announced plans for a thanksgiving ceremony in his constituency, saying President Yoweri Museveni is expected to attend as the guest of honour, although the date is yet to be announced.
