The Discoverie of Witchcraft

Ok, so here I would like to tell you about a very important book in the study of witchcraft, occult, and even stage magic or illusion. This book came out in 1584. At that time witches were being burned at the stake frequently, and the writer of the Discoverie, Reginald Scott, wrote the book in an attempt to quell the witch burning histeria. His position was that most of the people who were accused of witchcraft were either deluded to believe they had magical powers, what we might call mentally ill today, or, they were using tricks and illusions to produce effects, and there was no real magic at all. In the process of this, his was the first book to teach the tricks of magicians that we call stage magic today, like David Blaine, or David Copperfield. You can see an example of this sort of magic, showing the illusion of removing a man's head in these pictures.

Scott also published real witchcraft of the day, including rituals to conjure angels, demons, fairies, and the dead. You can see an example of a magic circle used to conjure fairies here, and the start of the ritual, which involves going to the cemetery to conjure the ghost of a suicide victim. "Look at how crazy all this stuff is!" Scott rants to his reader, "how could anyone believe this?" But people sure did. The book became a training manual for both witches and stage magicians in spite of the fact it was never intended for that purpose, at least as far as we know. Perhaps Scott really was a magician and was taking the opportunity to publish real magic right under the nose of the witch finders. Certainly if he would have published a book in support of witchcraft in those days he would have been burned at the stake himself. Regardless, it is a very important book to study for all witches. It's hard to read, the old time language is like reading the bible, but there are some incredible bits of magic in here. It's like looking back in time, to the year 1584.
