Minister of State for Local Government Balaam Barugahara has warned Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), Deputy RDCs and District Internal Security Officers (DISOs) that they should resign if they fail to expose corruption in the areas where they are deployed.
Speaking during an anti-corruption engagement in Bulambuli District, Balaam said security officials who ignore corruption become part of the problem.
"If a DISO or RDC does not perform their oversight role by exposing corruption, then they are associating with the corrupt and are corrupt themselves," he said.
The minister criticised the absence of key security officials in Bulambuli, saying both the RDC and Deputy RDC were missing during his visit, leaving the district without effective oversight.
He, however, praised the Uganda Police Force, particularly the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), the District Police Commander (DPC) and the Regional Police Commander (RPC), for remaining present throughout the anti-corruption meeting.
Balaam also suggested that patriotic citizens, journalists and whistleblowers who consistently expose corruption should be considered for leadership positions such as RDCs.
He further warned public officials against abusing their offices, saying investigations had uncovered cases where some leaders allegedly provided false information to cover up wrongdoing.
The minister said government would continue pursuing corrupt officials regardless of their position, stressing that every public servant has a duty to protect public resources and serve wananchi with integrity.
