KAMPALA, Uganda - Veteran journalist Joe Nam, a former reporter with New Vision, has been shot dead in a suspected targeted attack at his home in the Kampala metropolitan area- Daily Monitor.
Nam, 55, was killed in the early hours of Sunday, April 19, 2026, at around 1:00 a.m. in Kawanda Central, Nabweru Division, Wakiso District. According to police, an unidentified armed assailant reportedly wearing a mask opened fire before fleeing the scene immediately.
Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the incident, stating that preliminary findings indicate the attacker struck and escaped without being identified. The motive behind the killing remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing.
Police say officers responded to the scene and later conveyed Nam’s body to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination as part of the inquiry.
Joe Nam was a seasoned journalist who spent decades in Uganda’s media industry, working with state-owned media and contributing to national discourse. After retiring from active journalism, he ventured into publishing and authored works reflecting on Uganda’s political future, including a book examining possible scenarios after President Yoweri Museveni’s rule. He was also involved in tourism and marketing, maintaining an active intellectual presence even after leaving the newsroom.
Circumstances of the attack;
Preliminary reports suggest Nam may have stepped outside his residence moments before the shooting occurred, when the gunman struck. The attacker then fled, leaving behind no immediate clues.
The killing adds to growing concern over security incidents within the greater Kampala area, particularly involving high-profile individuals.
