OVERVIEW AND JOB PURPOSE

Jamii Media Company Limited is an online media company that hosts and runs JamiiForums.com, the most popular website in East and Central Africa. Parallel with this site, Jamii Media also runs online news portal (FikraPevu.com) and manages a number of the most subscribed fans’ pages of the popular social media outlets e.g Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Jamii Media has been nurturing a more informed, engaged and entertained global community of Swahili users. This has been archived by providing online platforms where people dare to talk openly. Each day, users of JamiiForums.com share news, events, and stories from politics, economics, to social life.

Jamii Media is currently looking for someone to design and build creative interactive graphics, news applications, infographics/data visualizations and other digital products to be used in producing reports and telling Jamii Media stories in new and innovative ways.


1. RESPONSIBILITIES


Data Journalists will work in collaboration with M&E to source, pitch and produce data-visualisations, cartography and infographics to ensure the best representation of data in all formats (print, app and web). Specifically, the Data Journalist will work to improve the the quality and representation of data accompanying stories by the Specialized Content Developers (SCDs) and Regional Reporters to generate compelling data-driven stories.


2. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED


The applicant must have a relevant education background in Data Journalism at the level of Diploma and above. Ideally, the applicant should be a graduate in Econometrics, Journalism, Statistics, Graphic Design or Data Science.

She/he should posses a set of skills that range from data analysis to infographics and interactive visualizations; from coding and developing news apps to designing news content.

Prior working in a daily newsroom with multimedia production experience that includes graphics (graphs, charts, maps, etc.) is desirable but not required.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellence in analysing data, numeracy and literacy skills, creativity, presentation of self-narrating stories, and journalistic judgment
