The US government has donated two patrol boats to the Zanzibar government in efforts to control criminal activities, particularly drug trafficking. This was said by State Minister in the First Vice-President's Office Fatma Abdulhabib Fereji when responding to a question by Tume constituency lawmaker on the Civic United Front (CUF) ticket Rufai Said Rufai on Wednesday.
She said the two boats were issued by the US embassy in the country for the aim of improving security, calling on the people to cooperate with state organs in the fight against drug trafficing in the Isles.
"The police force has received two modern patrol boats from the US government in efforts to fight drug trafficking and other crimes along the coast," said the minister.
She said the anti-drugs fight in the Isles faced a number of challenges, including its geographical position and environment, particularly the existence of numerous illegal ports along the coast.
