Uganda Signs Deal to Build Karuma Bridge

The Government of Uganda has signed a contract to build a Karuma Bridge on the Kampala–Gulu Highway, bringing the long awaited project one step closer to reality.

The agreement was signed in Japan, with the project being funded by the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The new bridge is expected to make travel safer, faster and more reliable for the thousands of motorists, traders and passengers who use the busy Kampala Gulu road every day.

Government officials say the bridge will also improve the movement of goods to northern Uganda and neighbouring countries, making trade easier and reducing transport delays.

Construction will be carried out by the Japanese company Zenitaka Corporation.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Eng. Isaac Wani, Commissioner for National Roads, said the project will improve road safety, strengthen transport links and support economic growth along one of Uganda's most important highways.

The signing marks another key milestone towards delivering a modern bridge that many road users have been eagerly waiting for.
