Uganda experienced a nationwide power blackout last night on the 5th of June after a major failure on the national electricity grid caused a countrywide outage. The disruption affected homes, businesses, hospitals, and public services across the country. According to the grid operator, power went off at approximately 9:07 p.m. local time.

The outage was confirmed by the state-owned power agencies, including Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) and Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL). UEDCL informed customers that the blackout resulted from a nationwide grid outage reported by UETCL and said technical teams were working to restore electricity supply as quickly as possible.

A few hours later, UETCL announced that the national grid had been fully restored and apologized for the inconvenience caused. However, many Ugandans reported that electricity had not yet returned in some areas, suggesting that restoration was gradual and that local distribution challenges persisted even after the main grid was brought back online.

The incident has renewed concerns about the reliability of Uganda's electricity network, particularly at a time when the country's power distribution system is under government management following the end of the Umeme concession in 2025.

Reports indicate that businesses and households have continued to experience frequent outages in recent months, raising questions about infrastructure stability and maintenance.

While authorities have not yet publicly disclosed the exact technical cause of Friday night's grid failure, the blackout ranks among the most significant power disruptions Uganda has experienced in recent years.
Some areas reportedly continued experiencing outages even after the restoration announcement.
