Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) has taken delivery of three 80 MVA transformers for installation at Kabalega Substation in Hoima Industrial Park, a critical step in strengthening the national grid in the Albertine region.
The utility said the high-capacity transformers will significantly enhance power reliability and transmission capacity to support strategic projects, including the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) and one of Uganda’s largest industrial parks.
These transformers will provide the backbone of the electrical infrastructure required to power the EACOP, petrochemical industries, and other industrial installations, further advancing Uganda’s journey towards industrialisation, energy security, and economic transformation,” UETCL noted.
The Kabalega Substation lies at the heart of Uganda’s oil and gas operations, with the 1,443-kilometre EACOP set to transport crude from Kabaale in Hoima District to the Chongoleani Peninsula near Tanga Port in Tanzania.
Because Uganda’s crude is viscous and waxy, the pipeline must be heated and insulated to maintain a minimum operating temperature of 50°C, requiring a reliable power backbone along the route. In Uganda, this power will primarily come from existing power stations, while in Tanzania it will be drawn from the national grid and EACOP’s own mix of solar generation, generators and battery storage.
UETCL said the arrival of the transformers marks a major milestone in building the infrastructure needed to anchor long-term industrial growth around the country’s nascent oil sector.
