Uganda will celebrate its 64th Independence Day on October 9, 2026, with a largely virtual ceremony, as the country marks 64 years since gaining independence from British colonial rule.

This year’s celebrations are being held on a smaller scale, with the main proceedings expected to be followed by citizens through television, radio and online broadcasts. The official government events diary lists Independence Day celebrations for October 9.

The celebrations will run under the theme “Embracing Our Sovereignty with Hope and Visionary Leadership.” President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is also expected to confer national honours and awards on distinguished Ugandans.

The scaled-down celebrations come as the government prioritises spending on other national needs, while various institutions, churches and musical groups are holding thanksgiving prayers, fellowship events and other activities to mark the occasion.

As Uganda celebrates 64 years of independence, the anniversary also provides an opportunity for citizens to reflect on the country’s achievements, challenges and the future they want to see.
