Two Arua City technical officials have been arrested following concerns over the stalled construction of Owoko Bridge in Ayivu West.
City Engineer Charles Omona and Procurement Officer Jimmy Omale were arrested on Friday on the orders of Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama during his inspection of road projects in the region.
The minister questioned why the bridge project, launched three years ago, had stalled despite government releasing Shs586 million for the works.
Byamukama said his inspection found that Shs266 million had been spent without visible work on the ground.
The officials were also questioned over allegations that the contractor used materials below the required specifications, including 10mm steel bars instead of the specified 16mm bars.
After the officials failed to provide satisfactory explanations, the minister directed the Arua District Police Commander to arrest them and have them explain the alleged mismanagement of government funds. The two were handcuffed and taken to Arua Police Station.
Nebbi–Arua road
Byamukama also announced that rehabilitation of the 102km Nebbi–Arua road and Ora Bridge is expected to begin next month.
The Shs321 billion project will be undertaken by Chinese state-owned China Railway 18th Bureau Group Co Ltd and will also cover other critical roads in Arua City.
The minister's inspection tour, which began on Thursday, also covers roads in Buliisa, Pakwach, Koboko, Yumbe and Moyo.
