Bugangaizi East County MP Onesimus Twinamasiko has called on the government to expedite the execution of Christopher Okello Onyum, who was sentenced to death in April 2026 for the murder of four toddlers.
Twinamasiko urged authorities to move swiftly on the sentence, saying Onyum should face the punishment handed down by the court for the killings.
However, Deputy Attorney General and Kyaka South County MP Jackson Karugaba Kafuuzi said the sentence cannot be carried out yet because it must first be confirmed by the Supreme Court.
Kafuuzi explained that the law requires a death sentence imposed by a lower court to undergo the necessary judicial confirmation before execution can take place.
The development means that despite the death sentence handed to Onyum in April, the execution cannot proceed until the Supreme Court completes the required process.
Christopher Okello Onyum, 39, is a Ugandan-born American who was convicted of murdering four toddlers at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre in Makindye Division, Kampala, on April 2, 2026.
The victims were Eteku Gideon, Keisha Agenorwoth Otim, Sseruyange Ignatius and Odeke Ryan. Prosecutors said Onyum entered the facility posing as a parent seeking to enrol a child, having earlier visited the centre and paid school fees. He later attacked the children with a knife, killing all four.
Prosecutors argued that Onyum carried out the killings in pursuit of wealth through human sacrifice, citing evidence of searches on his electronic devices relating to schools and beheadings.
The defence, meanwhile, argued that he was mentally ill and should not be held criminally responsible. Justice Alice Komuhangi Khaukha rejected the insanity defence, finding that his conduct before, during and after the attack demonstrated planning and an understanding of his actions.
The High Court subsequently convicted him on all four counts and, on April 30, 2026, sentenced him to death.
