After a joyless spell at Barcelona, the Swede spent last season on loan at Milan, where he helped Massimiliano Allegri's side win their first Serie A title since 2003. He is certain to leave Camp Nou for good this summer, although Milan will face competition for his signature from Manchester City and Real Madrid, who are both managed by two of his former managers, Roberto Mancini and José Mourinho respectively.

French Under-21 international Varane (above left) has reportedly caught the eye of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who has been impressed with the 18-year-old's performances this season. A deal in the region of £10m should be enough to lure the young defender to Old Trafford, with the French club looking for cash to rebuild their squad after suffering relegation from Ligue 1.
