The Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere will be sidelined for a period of between four and five months following surgery to remedy a stress fracture to his right ankle.
Wilshere has not featured for the Gunners in a competitive game this season after suffering the injury in a pre-season friendly against the New York Red Bulls at the Emirates Stadium.
A statement on the club's official website on Monday evening read: "Jack Wilshere has this morning undergone ankle surgery at a central London hospital.
"Under the care of two world-renowned surgeons, Jack has had the stress fracture of his right ankle repaired.
"The initial indications are that the surgery has been successful and Jack will now undergo a prolonged period of rehabilitation. It is envisaged that Jack's rehabilitation will take a period of four to five months."
Wilshere had initially hoped that the problem would not require surgery but the club confirmed last week that an operation would be necessary.
Wilshere added: "I've had my operation this morning and all went well. My ankle is little bit sore, but I'm already looking forward to working hard to get fit and playing again.
"I would also just like to say thanks for the many messages of support I have received from you – the fantastic Arsenal supporters. See you all soon at the Emirates."

A delegation of Manchester City officials, led by long-serving secretary Bernard Halford, will lay a wreath at the memorial to the Munich air crash tomorrow.
City are in Germany for their Champions League encounter with Bayern Munich and are keen to pay their respects to the 23 people who died after the plane, carrying the Manchester United team, club officials and journalists back from a European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade, crashed at the Munich-Reim airport on February 6, 1958.
Legendary Blues keeper Frank Swift, who became a journalist at the end of his playing career, was also killed.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson welcomed the gesture.

He said: "I think it's refreshing. We appreciate that from Manchester City and of course one of their own former players was killed in the crash.
"It shows the game is not as bad as we often think. If that's the case, well done."

[h=1]Basle game will be make or break for Man United's forgotten man Berbatov[/h] Published 22:30 26/09/11 By David McDonnell

Dimitar Berbatov will learn on Tuesday night whether Sir Alex Ferguson still has faith in him or whether his Manchester United career is effectively over.
With Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez out injured, Ferguson must choose from Berbatov, Michael Owen and Danny Welbeck to start up front against FC Basle at Old Trafford tonight.
Berbatov, who has not scored in the Champions League for three years, has become marginalised at United, despite remaining the club's most expensive ever player at £30million.
The Bulgarian is desperate to start tonight, despite being hauled off with 20 minutes to go in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Stoke, having made his first Premier League start of the season.

With Berbatov out of contract at the end of the season and free to talk to other clubs from January 1, the 30-year-old striker's future remains in the balance, with the form of Welbeck and Owen pushing him further out of the picture.
Ferguson appeared to damn United's record signing with feint praise when he insisted Berbatov still had a significant role to play for United, despite him having scored just twice since the end of January.
But if Berbatov does not start tonight, it will prove beyond doubt Ferguson has lost all confidence in a player whom he did not even deem worthy of a place on the bench for last season's Champions League final against Barcelona. "Of course he's got a part to play," said Ferguson when asked about Berbatov. "He's one of our squad members and they've all got a part to play.
"We have a lot of games in the Premier League, Champions, FA Cup and Carling Cup. It's an exhausting season unless you use your squad.
"I don't have to reassure him. He knows his place in the squad and that applies to many players like Mame Diouf, Federico Macheda and Michael Owen. They're not playing regularly either.
"We've only had six Premier League games and the ones against Benfica and Leeds, so it's still early doors. There's plenty of time.
"It's hard because of the number of strikers we have. There's Rooney, Hernandez, Michael Owen is also there and we've got Welbeck, Macheda and Diouf, so it's not easy."
Ferguson, in prickly mood ahead of Tuesday night's Group C encounter, dismissed the notion that competition for places, with so many forwards at his disposal, had brought out the best in his strikers this season.
"I don't think that applies itself at all," said Ferguson. "They [the players] understand that having a big squad gives them a better chance of winning things.
"They accepted that a long time ago, the squad system, and they want to do well when they get the opportunity, because, as a group, we all want to do well. So I don't have any issues with that at all."
Despite plundering 20 goals last season to end the campaign as the Premier League's joint top scorer with Carlos Tevez, Berbatov has endured a remarkable drought in Europe.
His last Champions League goals came in a 3-0 win over Celtic at Old Trafford in October 2008, since when Berbatov has started 10 games and come on in a further 10, failing to score in any of them.
Although United have a one-way clause in Berbatov's contract enabling them to extend his deal by a further 12 months, it seems inconceivable they will choose to do so, given his current status.
A January move still seems the likeliest scenario, with Paris St Germain maintaining interest in Berbatov, despite him turning down the chance to join them in the summer in a £13m deal.
Although United should have no problem in overcoming Swiss champions Basle, Ferguson is acutely aware of the danger of making too many changes, having lost 3-0 away to Fenerbahce and 1-0 at home to Besiktas in recent seasons when tinkering with his side.
"We played Basle a few years ago and they've always been the premier team in Switzerland, either them or FC Zurich," said Ferguson.
"There was a spell when they were beginning to produce good players like Philip Senderos and they've been doing that for quite a few years now, getting good young players through which gives them good merit in terms of scouting in Europe.
"A lot of clubs are scouting players in Switzerland now. Their national team has always been reasonably good. They seem to represent themselves quite well, and Basle have good experience in Europe because they've been there a few times, so we'll respect that."
Ferguson re-iterated his belief that the Champions League remains the best competition in the world, outstripping the World Cup and European Championships because of the superior quality of teams and players on show.
But he dismissed the notion that this was a golden period for United in Europe, despite their impressive feat of reaching three finals in the past four years, two of which they have lost.
"I think the Champions League is the best competition in the world now, better than the World Cup and European Championships," said Ferguson.
"It's a fantastic tournament. But this isn't a golden period for us because we've lost two finals.
"We've been consistent in the Champions League and our form away from home has been outstanding.
"Obviously we hope we can do better this year and win it, because that's the aim of this club all the time."

[h=1]Dirk Kuyt frustrated after losing Liverpool starting place[/h] • Holland international disappointed at being dropped
• Kuyt believes Liverpool squad is strongest since 2006

Dirk Kuyt has spoken of his disappointment at losing a regular starting place at Liverpool but accepts the club had to improve competition for places to challenge for honours once more.
The Holland international has started only half of Liverpool's six Premier League games this season as the manager, Kenny Dalglish, seeks to integrate the £20m summer signing Jordan Henderson into the team and utilises his options up front. Kuyt's absence has surprised many given his form under Dalglish last season and contribution this term, and the 31-year-old admits it has been difficult to adapt to his changing role.
"I'm disappointed to be out of the team," said Kuyt, who returned to the bench against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday having started and scored against Brighton in the Carling Cup. "From childhood, I've always been disappointed when I'm not in the team because I'm desperate to be involved and make a good contribution. But it also makes me very determined too. I need to continue to prove myself, train as hard as possible and, when I do play, make sure my performance is of a high standard."
Despite the personal cost, the former Feyenoord striker admits Liverpool's squad now has the depth he encountered upon his arrival at the club in 2006 and required substantial investment following the final draining years under the former owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.
He added: "Competition is tough now but it's brilliant for the club that there are so many players to choose from now, top-class international players. The players realise at the end of the day you need more than 11 good players to be successful.
"When I first arrived here we had a very good, big squad but for the last two seasons before this one, we haven't had the depth that we did in the first three seasons. Someone like Craig Bellamy is a strong addition to what is already a very strong squad, and that can only be good for the team. We definitely have better quality now and more players to choose from as well. I think with the signings we've made, we have a great squad now so we should be ambitious and have confidence in ourselves."
Henderson has yet to convince that he merits a place in the team ahead of Kuyt but his fellow midfielder Lucas Leiva, who overcame a difficult start to his own Anfield career before establishing himself, insists the former Sunderland player simply needs time to adapt to his summer transfer.
Lucas said: "I don't blame the young players because I have been in their position for a few years. He is English and has already adapted to the Premier League. But to change your club and move to a big place like Liverpool is difficult. I think he is playing well. He will get confidence when he gets more minutes and understands the role he needs to do more.
"We just have to keep encouraging him and give him the confidence to keep improving. We can see he has the attributes to be a good player but he is still very young and we just have to give him time and be patient. Then we will see he is a good player. We can see in training that he likes to work hard and that is the main thing. As long as you are working hard every day, your opportunities will come. He will be ready to show his best form if we don't rush him and give him time to settle."

[h=1]Young relishing 'dream' Champions League debut[/h] Published 22:28 26/09/11 By David McDonnell

Ashley Young is relishing the prospect of making his Champions League debut with Manchester United on Tuesday night.
Young, a £16million summer signing from Aston Villa, has never played in European football's elite club competition.
The England winger, left out of United's squad for their 1-1 draw with Benfica a fortnight ago, said the chance to play in the Champions League was one of the key factors in moving from Villa.
"When you come to a club like Manchester United, you're going to be challenged," said Young.

"I'm definitely someone who wants to challenge myself at the top level and being able to play in the big competitions at club level is every player's dream.
"So I'm looking forward to playing in the Champions League."
Young said he was made aware of the chasm between United and Villa when he went on his new club's pre-season tour of the US in the summer.
"As soon as we went on the pre-season tour I realised how big the club was compared to Villa, in terms of the number of staff and the size of the squad," said Young.
"We have a great squad here and we can use all the players because we're involved in a lot of competitions.
"You need to be able to rotate the squad and every player who goes out there in the Manchester United shirt wants to do well.
"We know it's going to be a tough game against Basel, but I'm sure if we impose ourselves on the game as we have done in every other game this season, we'll get three points."
Sir Alex Ferguson praised the immediate impact Young had made since joining United, likening the winger to Old Trafford legend Ryan Giggs.
"He has great awareness of the game and fantastic endurance when running from box to box, which is something we have enjoyed with Ryan Giggs for many years," said Ferguson.
"His crossing of the ball has, of course, been first class. He's integrated very well, has good application in his training and done everything right, so he's doing very well."
Young declared himself happy with the start he has made to life at United but said: "There have only been a few games this season and I've been delighted with the performances I have put in so far.
"But it's a long season and there are plenty of games coming up thick and fast. You have to be ready and on your toes. I feel ready and want to do well every time I pull on the shirt."

[h=1]Messi business! FC Barcelona stars in a sweat over new shirts[/h] Barça stars complain Nike gear soaks up too much sweat and more than doubles in weight in the first 45 minutes

It was supposed to be the sports business marriage from heaven. Nike makes the kit for European Champions FC Barcelona and both share the income from millions of shiny claret-and-blue shirts bearing the names of living legends such as Leo Messi.
The jerseys are more than just presents for fans. Special "pitch shirts", made just for the squad, are also meant to make the players' lives easier on the pitch, improving performance and helping them win titles.
But embarrassed Barcelona officials have now admitted that the players are unhappy with the shirt design, complaining that it soaks up sweat to become a heavy, skin-clinging nuisance.
Players have even taken to weighing their shirts on scales at half-time to see how much weight they have gained, according to Spain's El País newspaper.
A shirt that weighed 200 grams at the beginning of a match can weigh up to two-and-a-half times as much just 45 minutes later.
Dressing room sources told El País that players noticed during a pre-season tour of the US that the shirt "weighed a tonne" and "stuck to the body like a limpet".
They hoped the problem would not persist when they returned to the more forgiving weather conditions in Spain, but on Friday the club called a meeting with Nike to seek solutions.
Nike said it has begun testing the shirt. "Nike's product team is working to address concerns with the FCB home jersey," a spokeswoman said.
"All product concerns are treated with the utmost importance and a solution is expected when all appropriate testing is completed."
Major clubs can sell more than 1m shirts a year, and Barcelona had said this season's design looked set to break records.
The much-vaunted eco-friendly pitch shirt, said to use the recycled plastic of a dozen water bottles in a single garment, reportedly uses a version of Nike's Dri-Fit fabric, made of polyester microfibres to help wearers stay dry and comfortable.
Nike's website boasts that the official Barcelona shirt it sells for £55 is "a game-ready performer with sweat-wicking fabric for distraction-free competition".
The description does not seem to fit the pitch shirts worn by the club's players.

[h=1]McClaren stops 'squabbling' with board and insists he won't quit Forest[/h] Published 23:00 26/09/11 By James Nursey

Steve McClaren says he has finally ended his transfer "squabbling" with Nottingham Forest's board and vowed not to quit.
Mirror Sport recently revealed new Forest boss McClaren was already considering his future at the City Ground despite only joining in June.
He was upset after only signing Ishmael Miller and Jonathan Greening for fees after nine players left Forest.
Free agents George Boateng, Andy Reid and Matt Derbyshire were the other new arrivals.

McClaren vented his fury before the transfer window shut at Forest's controversial 'transfer acquisition committee', which includes consultant David Pleat.
But McClaren insists he is now fully focused on steering Forest up the Championship ahead of tonight's trip to Burnley after a poor start.
"My job is to fight for what I think it is right," said McClaren, who has since signed QPR defender Clint Hill on loan.
"But as soon as the window closes, you know what you have got, where you are and now is the time to concentrate on where we are going.
"There came a moment after the window, we know the situation and the parameters.
"We know this is our squad and we get on with it - that's everybody.
"From that moment we can sit and say: 'stop squabbling off the field and concentrate on it'.
"Previously, everything was up in the air.
"There was much more going on off the field than there was going on the field.
"That caused instability amongst everybody.
"No more own goals - we have done enough this season.
"From our side there was an acceptance of the situation and we just get on with it.
"I have signed a contract for three years and I'll be disappointed if we don't get promotion in that three years."
Ex-England boss McClaren took the Forest job on the back of promises of substantial investment for a genuine bid at ending the club's 13-year exile from the Premier League.
But the club's chairman, venture capitalist Nigel Doughty, has pumped in £70m over the last 11 years and is being more cautious in light of UEFA's financial fair play regulations.
It has led to tensions at the top between Doughty, chief executive Mark Arther and McClaren.
But after a 1-0 win at Watford with a new formation, McClaren added: "The attitude of the players is fantastic and that is what has kept me going all along.
"They have had to adapt to us and we have to adapt to them.
"We had one problem we were conceding far too many goals.
"But we have addressed it and there was a big reaction to the win which pleased me."
