Juan Mata is on the verge of joining Chelsea from Valencia for a fee of €27m (£23.5m). Mata spoke to André Villas-Boas during the day and the Chelsea manager explained the role he has in mind for the attacking midfielder. Lawyers are finalising details on the deal, which is expected to be definitively closed on Saturday. The Chelsea manager had admitted this week: "We might just add a number in midfield."
The 23-year-old, who has studied at university and speaks reasonable English, has long been open to a move to the Premier League. His father and agent, also Juan Manuel Mata, had spoken to a number of clubs in England. Mata's initial preference was to secure a move to Barcelona but he was in no hurry to depart Valencia. The signings of Alexis Sánchez and Cesc Fábregas by Barcelona finally ended any possibility of a transfer to the Camp Nou.
Mata had already turned down the opportunity to join Tottenham Hotspur at the end of July. Tottenham sought to take advantage of a clause in Mata's contract that allowed him to leave the club before 31 July for a set fee of €25m: had Valencia unilaterally blocked a move at that stage, they would have been forced to increase Mata's salary. The player, though, did not want to move to Spurs.
Liverpool had previously shown an interest in the player but opted in the end to buy Stewart Downing from Aston Villa, with Kenny Dalglish putting a premium on players with Premier League experience. Despite showing an interest and although Mata's camp was open to the idea of a move to the Emirates, Arsenal failed to make a formal bid during that window of opportunity in July. Now Chelsea have done so.
Valencia were not keen to sell one of their key players and believe that, although their financial situation remains difficult, they were not obliged to sell.
They had also hoped to avoid a situation in which they lost the midfielder close to the start of the season but replacements had already been signed in the shape of Sergio Canales and Pablo Piatti and they had set a figure of €30m at which they could be persuaded, given that the July release clause would come into effect again next season.
Mata's desire to accept the offer to move to west London finally helped to bring the two clubs to an agreement which is being finalised.

[h=1]Arsène Wenger claims that Samir Nasri is 'happy' at Arsenal[/h] • Manager says that a move to Man City is 'far from being done'
• Hints that Nasri may yet stay in north London

Arsène Wenger has claimed that Samir Nasri is happy at Arsenal and that any deal for the French midfielder's possible departure is a long way from completion.
Nasri has been expected to leave the Emirates Stadium this summer after reported interest from Manchester City. Wenger has, however, stated that the France international may yet stay at Arsenal.
Nasri was a surprise starter in Arsenal's 2-0 defeat at home to Liverpool on Saturday and with 10 days to go before the transfer window closes, the manager hinted that his 24-year-old compatriot may yet remain in north London.
"He is happy here. There is no departure of Nasri at the moment," Wenger told the French media outlet TF1. "Maybe one day, but it's far, far, far from being done."
Nasri's departure would leave the Gunners severely undermanned in midfield after Cesc Fábregas completed his protracted move to Barcelona last week.
To add to Wenger's problems, he is also without Alex Song and Gervinho for two more league games due to suspension, while Emmanuel Frimpong, who made his starting league debut on Saturday, will also serve a ban after he was sent off against Liverpool.

[h=1]Gary Neville reveals bizarre England methods under Glenn Hoddle[/h] • Injections and 'heart-touching' used at 1998 World Cup
• Gambling culture under Kevin Keegan was 'ridiculous'

Gary Neville said that his long England career was 'a massive waste of time'. Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian

Gary Neville has pulled no punches in his assessment of his long international career in his forthcoming book, including some strong opinions on practices used by the former England manager Glenn Hoddle.
In his book, the former Manchester United full-back, who retired in February after playing 400 times for United and winning 85 caps, calls his England career "a massive waste of time" and says that many players lived in fear of excessive criticism from supporters and the media.
"It should be fantastic, the best moments of your life [playing for England]" writes Neville in his book, Red, which is being serialised in the Mail on Sunday. "But there is no doubt that too many players spend too much time fearing the consequences of failure when they pull on an England shirt."
Neville also criticises the Football Association over its managerial appointments and highlights some controversial methods utilised by Hoddle between 1996 and 1999.
"There's no doubt that the FA mishandled managerial appointments, letting [Terry] Venables go too easily and appointing Glenn Hoddle and Steve McClaren before they were ready," Neville writes. "Hoddle took over from Venables and it's been said before: if only he had possessed the man-management skills to go with his undoubted football intelligence. He was a very good coach who wanted England to play the right way.
"He also believed in alternative methods, including Eileen Drewery, the faith healer, who'd visited the camp a few times before the World Cup. As a bit of a sceptic, I'd never gone to see her. When the 1998 World Cup started, some of the players started taking injections from Glenn's favourite medic, a Frenchman called Dr Rougier. It was different from anything we'd done at United, but all above board, I'm sure.
"After some of the lads said they'd felt a real burst of energy, I decided to seize any help on offer. So many of the players decided to go for it before that Argentina match that there was a queue to see the doctor. Before the game, Glenn did his usual pre-match routine of moving around the players, shaking their hands and touching them just over the heart. We'll never know if the methods had any positive effect.
"One of the masseurs told me Glenn had asked the staff to walk around the pitch anti-clockwise during the game against Argentina to create positive energy. Sadly, it didn't do us much good."
Neville was also critical of Kevin Keegan, Sven-Goran Eriksson and McClaren, a former coach at Old Trafford, and in particular the latter's decision to take the captaincy away from David Beckham.
"Things got so bad during Kevin's reign that it was a relief to be left on the sidelines or injured," said Neville. "As well as the problems with the team, I was never thrilled about the gambling culture off the pitch. The amount of time spent on horse racing or cards was ridiculous. It was all very old school, completely different to what I'd become used to in terms of discipline, focus and preparation at United.
"Eriksson took over from Kevin and made instant improvements. I liked Sven from the start. I would have reservations by the end, but the first few years were as enjoyable as any in an England shirt.
"By the World Cup in 2006, we were still way too reliant on an automatic first XI. The big names were guaranteed to play rather than the best team. It seemed to me like a fudge to get around the issue of how to keep Becks, [Steven] Gerrard and [Frank] Lampard in the same side.
"I felt sorry for McClaren during his reign as manager… it would also turn out to be a mistake dropping Becks, Sol Campbell and David James from his first squad. We could all see what he was trying to do. He was trying to start a new regime. But to drop Becks altogether didn't make sense."

[h=1]I'm no quitter, says Arsène Wenger, after Arsenal's defeat by Liverpool[/h] • 'We've had a couple of disappointing results, that's all'
• Kenny Dalglish delighted by Liverpool's double substitution

Arsène Wenger says there is no chance he will walk away from Arsenal, effectively overruling the intervention of David Dein, his former vice-chairman, who warned that if Gunners' fans kept complaining and demanding more money be spent the manager could wash his hands of the club.
"There is no chance of that happening, I like to keep a sense of perspective," Wenger said after seeing his side lose 2-0 at home to Liverpool, suffering another player dismissed and one more injured, and hearing his players booed off at the end. "It is still the start of the season and we have had a couple of disappointing results, that's all. I don't feel under any more pressure than usual. We have an important week coming up and this is a time to stick together."
Wenger made the reasonable point that, even with eight players missing, Arsenal had put in a good performance against Liverpool, at least when they still had 11 men on the pitch.
He could have added that Samir Nasri, expected to miss the game and turn up in Manchester before the end of the transfer window, had surprised everyone by playing and playing well.
"Why not? He is an Arsenal player and he loves the club – I always said I would try to keep him. It may be that, in the end, we have to sell him, but until he goes he is still happy to play for us."
Wenger claimed to have no knowledge of reports emanating from France that talks with Manchester City had broken down, and would not be drawn on whether Nasri will be seen in an Arsenal shirt again.
If he plays in the Champions League qualifier against Udinese in midweek, Nasri will be cup-tied in Europe and be a less attractive buying proposition. But even though Wenger could undoubtedly use an extra body, he would not commit himself either way. "I have not decided about that yet," he said.
The game at the Emirates changed when Emmanuel Frimpong marked his full Premier League debut with a dismissal for two yellow cards and, simultaneously, Liverpool made a double substitution. Kenny Dalglish sent on Luis Suárez and Raul Meireles and saw them create the late goals.
Wenger had no problems with the dismissal. "He deserved a yellow card for the challenge," he said. "Frimpong was the victim of a lack of experience and his own enthusiasm. He didn't need to make that tackle."
A beaming Dalglish was delighted with the way the game went. "That's a hell of a pair of subs to be able to bring on," the Liverpool manager said, before owning up to a mistake on the opening day at Anfield against Sunderland.
"I went with Suárez last week because he was on such a high in training," he explained. "He had only just come back to us after spending the summer with Uruguay and he didn't seem tired, but maybe it was a wee bit romantic of me to put him straight into the team. He wanted to do well and everyone else wanted him to do well, but perhaps he needed a bit more rest, and that's why I was more careful with him this week.
"I might have made a mistake against Sunderland, but you could see the benefit of an extra week's training today. We are a stronger squad than we were last season and being able to bring on two substitutes of such quality proves it."

[h=1]Capello joins chorus calling on Wenger to spend[/h] Published 14:45 21/08/11 By MirrorFootball

England manager Fabio Capello believes Arsenal need to add some fresh blood to their squad but concedes Arsene Wenger faces a tough task to bring in quality additions before the transfer window closes.
Wenger has come under pressure from Gunners fans following a difficult start to the season, which has seen Arsenal pick up one point from their opening two Barclays Premier League fixtures, their squad badly hit by injuries and suspension, and the loss of captain Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona.
With the future of Samir Nasri also up in the air and time running out before the end of the transfer market, Wenger, who has not led Arsenal to any silverware since 2005, has plenty to ponder at present, but Capello knows it is not an easy situation for the Frenchman.
Asked if he thought Wenger should continue at Arsenal, Capello said on Sky Sports' Goals on Sunday programme: "I hope he will stay on, I have a good relationship with him, he's a really good manager, but it's not a good moment, it's difficult after six years without a trophy for such an important club like Arsenal.

"I think he needs to buy some new players, some important players, but it's difficult to find top players at this moment, because the best players are playing with important teams, teams who want to win.
"I think Arsenal have got money but it's difficult to find top players to improve the team. Because if you spend the money buying normal players, it's not good, you need to spend money to improve the team."
Speaking on the same programme, the FA's director of football development Sir Trevor Brooking also believes Wenger is in a tough position, especially with regards to Nasri, who is out of contract next summer.
Brooking, who felt Nasri was ""fantastic" during the first half of last season, said: "At the start of the summer if you'd have said Fabregas or Nasri I'd say keep Nasri, although that's easy for me to say, if he's only got one year to go and you're going to let him go for nothing next summer, and if you can get £20million for him now, that's a decision but then you've got to try and bring in the same quality of player.
"That's the thing that Fabio was saying and Arsene has said, 'I've got money but don't want to spend it on an average player that's not going to improve the squad', because then he will be criticised for buying in when he hasn't improved the team. So he wants the quality but, as Fabio said, there's not a lot of quality left now because everyone is with the better sides at this stage of the summer.

[h=1]Raul: I'm not leaving Schalke[/h] Published 15:40 21/08/11 By MirrorFootball

Veteran Schalke striker Raul has pledged his future to the club amid speculation he was set to leave.
Raul met club officials this week to resolve his future after he was left out of the squad that lost 2-0 away to HJK Helsinki in the first leg of their Europa League play-off in midweek.
After Schalke turned down a bid from Blackburn for the 34-year-old last week there was speculation Raul was keen on leaving after one season at the Royal Blues.
But the former Real Madrid frontman, who started in today's Bundesliga trip to Mainz, denied such talk and instead claimed he was happy to remain in Gelsenkirchen for the final year of his contract.

"I never tire of repeating that I feel at home at Schalke," he said in a statement on the club's website.
"The affection shown to me by the Schalke fans is extraordinary and unforgettable. I'm definitively staying at Schalke and I will fulfil my contract.
"I'm fortunate to have a great family. My wife and my children and fully integrated in German life and I'm proud to be playing in the Bundesliga."
The Spaniard denied any rift with Schalke coach Ralf Rangnick and claimed he had been left out of the squad that flew to Finland to improve his fitness.
"It's good, proper and professional, as it should be between a coach and a player," he added.
"There are no problems. We're all concentrating on working together to achieve the best for Schalke this season."
Speaking about his omission in Helsinki, he added: "Although I can understand it being interpreted in various ways, perhaps because people didn't have the background knowledge, but I had spoken to the coach and we took the joint decision that I would have a rest and do some special customised training.
"There is nothing else to say."
Schalke general manager Horst Heldt welcomed the news after Raul scored 14 times in 36 games for the Royal Blues last season and helped inspire their run to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
"This clarity was important because it means we can now put the subject to bed and turn our focus back to our most important task, that of achieving success on the pitch with FC Schalke 04," he said.

Teenage Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson maintains the young Gunners can "step up to the mark" and help pull the team through one of the most testing spells under Arsene Wenger.
Jenkinson was handed a Barclays Premier League debut in yesterday's 2-0 defeat by Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium, which also saw 18-year-old centre-back Ignasi Miquel make his first top-flight appearance after Laurent Koscielny hobbled off with a back injury.
Given the current selection crisis facing Wenger - who will now be without midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong for the trip to Manchester United next weekend after the 19-year-old was sent off for two yellow cards - full-back Jenkinson is confident he and his fellow youngsters can compete.
"Our squad is stretched - that is quite obvious - but the people who have come in have done well, so I don't think there can be too many complaints," Jenkinson, 19, told radio reporters.

"There are a lot of young players in the squad - me included. But we are there for a reason - people believe in us - and all of us young ones have to step up to the mark to take responsibility, and that is what we will do."
Jenkinson, who featured in the midweek Champions League play-off first-leg win over Udinese, added: "Everyone pulls together. There is a good group we have got here and everyone is united.
"We are going to have ups and downs, but that is part of football.
"We did well against Udinese and then things did not go our way with Liverpool.
"But we will bounce back. We have got a lot of quality and will come back from this, without a doubt."
Jenkinson was signed from Charlton in a £1million deal, and it has certainly been a meteoric rise for the defender, who had a spell on loan with non-league Eastbourne and Welling last season.
"If you look back a year ago, I would not have thought about this in my wildest dreams," said Jenkinson, whose family are all staunch Arsenal fans.
"Personally it is great to be involved and to be getting the chances to play.
"It is mixed emotions because of the result, but it is great having played my first Premier League game now and hopefully I can build on it."
Arsenal were certainly out of luck yesterday, when Wenger was already without several first-team players because of suspension and injury.
The Gunners were reduced to 10 men for the final 20 minutes after Frimpong's rash challenge on Lucas Leiva, and went behind to Aaron Ramsey's own goal before last-minute strike from substitute Luis Suarez clinched victory for the visitors.
"It is very difficult to take that defeat on the chin with the effort we have put in," Wenger told BBC Sport.
Despite being expected to sign for Manchester City, amid rumours the £22million move had stalled, Samir Nasri produced a composed display - and was unfortunate not to see his darting run end with a goal in the first half when a 25-yard strike drifted just wide.
It remains to be seen if the France midfielder will be involved in the trip to Italy next week, having been suspended for the first leg.
Should he play, then Nasri would not be eligible for City in Europe were he to move.
Wenger said: "For us now the biggest problem is to lift the team and prepare for Wednesday night. If Samir can be with us, it is even better."
Asked if the midfielder would play, Wenger responded: "Why not?"

[h=1]Big Sam blames Upton Park 'fear factor' for draw[/h] Published 17:03 21/08/11 By MirrorFootball

http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/new...or-for-draw-against-Leeds-article788682.html#

Sam Allardyce blamed the "fear factor" after West Ham threw away victory against Leeds at Upton Park this afternoon.
The Hammers were leading 2-1 heading into the final minute, but just as they had in their opening-day defeat by Cardiff, they were defending deeper and deeper and were punished when Adam Clayton grabbed a dramatic equaliser.
"When you are 2-1 up at home you have to take responsibility for seeing the game out," said Hammers chief Allardyce.
"You don't put pressure on yourself and unfortunately we did. We don't do what needs to be done to get the result, we've lacked the professionalism.

"Away from home it's not been a problem, the opposition haven't had a sniff, but here it puts a fear factor in everybody before they turn up at the next home game.
"That fear factor means everyone at the stadium is going to be edgy next time and that makes it very difficult for us to win matches.
"To win two away and then falter at home is a great shame but that anxiety will not go away until we win a game."
West Ham took the lead from a corner in the sixth minute when Carlton Cole volleyed past Andy Lonergan.
Leeds won a penalty in the 28th minute when Matt Taylor controlled the ball with his arm in the box but Max Gradel, the subject of a failed bid from West Ham earlier in the summer, rolled his effort wide.
Leeds finally drew level in the 59th minute when Robert Snodgrass' cross found McCormack in front of goal, but three minutes later the hapless Patrick Kisnorbo thumped Julien Faubert's cross into his own net.
West Ham should have gone further ahead but Scott Parker, being watched by England boss Fabio Capello, hit a post.
And the inevitable happened as stoppage time approached. Snodgrass raided down the right again, Jonathan Howson's shot hit the underside of the crossbar and Clayton followed up to fire past Robert Green.
Allardyce was also left fuming at referee Michael Oliver, who waved away two penalty appeals, firstly when Cole was felled by Aidy White and then when Kisnorbo appeared to wrestle James Tomkins to the gound.
"Two major decisions have gone against us today," he added.
"In critical parts of the game we should have had two blatant penalties. I've seen them again with our technology and nobody will convince me they are anything but blatant penalties.
"It's disappointing when you see the referee not do what he is paid to do.
"There's no doubt he's looking at the incident and making a judgment very quickly, and unfortunately on two occasions he made the wrong one."
Leeds boss Simon Grayson knows just knows how Allardyce feels.
"It's not easy being the favourites for the division, everybody wants to beat you, we had it in League One," he said.
"You could sense that nervousness creeping in, but you have to deal with it.
"But full credit to my players, we dug deep and a draw was the very least we deserved."

[h=1]Arsenal begin transfer talks with Rennes midfielder Yann M'Vila[/h] • Arsène Wenger targets 21-year-old French international
• Jack Wilshere may be available for Udinese match

Arsène Wenger has responded to Arsenal's troubled start to the season by making a bid for the Rennes holding midfielder Yann M'Vila. The manager's attempt to strengthen his team came as hopes grew that Jack Wilshere will return from ankle trouble to face Udinese in Wednesday's pivotal Champions League play-off second leg.
M'Vila, who has established himself as a regular in the France team, would cost £12m. The 21-year-old is under contract until 2015 but Rennes have allowed Wenger to talk to him. Arsenal's manager also has an interest in Sochaux's attacking midfielder Marvin Martin.
Wenger's immediate concern, though, is his midfield to face Udinese. Wilshere, who has not featured this season, had been considered a major doubt for the trip to north-eastern Italy, where Arsenal will attempt to protect a 1-0 lead and qualify for the group stage of Europe's elite competition for the 14th year in a row.
He left the Emirates Stadium after last Tuesday's first-leg against the Italian team with a foot in a protective boot and he missed the morale-sapping 2-0 home defeat to Liverpool on Saturday, when the problems mounted for Wenger.
Wilshere, though, came back to training on Thursday and provided he suffers no reaction before the squad fly to Italy on Tuesday afternoon, he will board with them. "Jack has a chance to play," Wenger said. "He has trained Thursday, Friday, Saturday."
Wenger's attitude towards Wilshere will be coloured with caution but given the stakes at the Stadio Friuli, he will be tempted to press him into action. The manager was without nine players against Liverpool through injury and suspension, and he lost the centre-half Laurent Koscielny to a back spasm in the 16th minute.
He will be able to pick the midfielder Alex Song and the forward Gervinho, as their three-match bans apply only to domestic competitions, while the central defender Johan Djourou "has a chance", according to Wenger, of returning from a hamstring injury. The midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong, who was sent off against Liverpool and will be suspended for Sunday's league fixture at Manchester United, will also be available against Udinese.
The obvious solution to the club's personnel problems is for Wenger to strengthen in the transfer market, and many supporters at the Emirates were keen to remind the Frenchman of that. Wenger said that Arsenal had "the money to buy players, we are not short of money", and he rejected the notion that the more he was urged to spend, the less likely he would be to do so.
"People feel I'm stubborn … I'm not," Wenger added. "I just want to do the best for the team and to buy the right players. If I have shown one thing in the last 15 years, it's that I have bought good players here.
"What you forget is we have bought players. We have bought Gervinho, [Alex Oxlade-] Chamberlain, [Carl] Jenkinson, [Ryo] Miyaichi, and you will see during the season they are top-quality players. But at the moment, we have to give them some time.
"Overall, we will buy. We will bring experienced players as well. People just say 'buy' but it's to buy the right player which is difficult."

Roberto Mancini is threatening to end Manchester City's long pursuit of Samir Nasri if the Frenchman becomes ineligible for the Champions League by playing for Arsenal in their play-off second-leg match at Udinese on Wednesday.
City are the early leaders of the Premier League after continuing their winning start with a 3-2 victory at Bolton Wanderers, but Mancini admitted being alarmed by Arsène Wenger's declaration that Nasri could feature for Arsenal and warned it is a "possible" deal-breaker.
The City manager hopes a £25m deal can be concluded "in the next 24 hours, maybe 48 hours" but that account differs vastly from Wenger's, who described it earlier in the day as "a long, long way away". Arsenal's manager made it clear he is willing to pick Nasri, regardless of the possible ramifications for the deal. "I wouldn't worry about that," he said. "What is important to us is to qualify."
Mancini said that would be a "big problem" and asked whether it was a serious enough issue for him to change targets, he nodded and said it was "possible". Nasri would be unable to feature in City's Champions League campaign if he plays at Udinese, even if Arsenal were to lose and not make the group stage.
There was clear frustration from Mancini as he reflected on the inability of the City board to finalise the deal before now. "It's a big problem. For 40 days [I've been saying]: 'I hope it's two days, three days, two days, three days.' I don't know why we didn't close it.
"If he plays in the Champions League [for Arsenal] it is a big problem. I don't know [if we would still sign him]. I'm sure we can close the deal. But it's a problem because we have followed Nasri for 40 days and it's important we take him. Also, for Nasri, I think it will be important [for him] to play in all the Champions League."
Alongside Wolverhampton Wanderers, City are one of only two teams in the Premier League to win their first two league matches, with David Silva, Gareth Barry and Edin Dzeko scoring the goals.
Mancini was entitled to think his team should have won more handsomely on a day when Silva and Dzeko persistently menaced the Bolton defence, but Sergio Agüero was unable to repeat the devastating form of his two-goal debut against Swansea. Agüero eventually made way for Carlos Tevez, who was given a warm reception from City's fans as he played his first match since trying to engineer a move out of the club. The early league leaders have scored seven goals in two games but Mancini was not entirely satisfied, complaining they had been guilty of "stupid" defending.
"It was incredible that the game finished 3-2," he said. "We played very well but it's impossible this game was open until the last few seconds and if we want to have a good championship [title bid], we can't concede goals like this.
"Both were stupid goals because we were dominating the game. We lose one ball – and then it's a goal. If you don't mark [for the second] it is a problem. We had many more chances [than Bolton] but until the last second the match was open and it was possible for the game to finish 3-3. We have to pay more attention."
Mancini went on to speak of his belief that City are still not ready to balance playing in the Champions League with a sustained title challenge and, asked whether he expected Nasri to be the club's last signing of the summer, he replied: "I hope not."
City's directors have already told their manager that the most he can hope for, beyond Nasri, is a possible loan arrangement, but the Italian refuses to change his opinion. "We need some [more] players if we want to complete our team," he said. "I hope he [Nasri] is not the last one."
Tevez, he continued, is almost certain to stay at City. "Carlos has a value. He is an important player, a top player for us, and we haven't received any bids for him for his value."
Still officially the club captain, Tevez came on in the 68th minute but did not take the armband from Vincent Kompany. Mancini, however, said he has still not decided whether to remove the captaincy from the Argentinian. "We have another week [to decide]. At the moment the captain is Vincent. After that, we will see."

The player in the bowels of the Emirates Stadium radiated conviction. Arsenal would pick themselves up, he predicted, because Arsène Wenger knew. An unfortunate selection crisis had served to offer a skewed impression of the team, which Liverpool had exploited to ignite their own season.
Do not forget, he added, that Arsenal were the only club who threatened to stop Manchester United towards the end of last season's Premier League. "I certainly don't think that Arsenal are a spent force or anything like that," he said. "I certainly wouldn't be writing off Arsenal."
The fighting talk, though, came in Jamie Carragher's unmistakable tones. The Liverpool captain had ignored the large target and chosen not to put the boot in. Call it professionalism, experience or, whisper it, sympathy. It almost felt too easy to kick Arsenal on Saturday.
As Carragher spoke, Arsenal's traumatised players walked by, eyes fixed on the floor or, trance-like, into the middle distance. They had nothing to say, no reassurances for the supporters, but who could blame them? It would have misjudged the mood to play up the positives, such as the excellence of Wojciech Szczesny and Thomas Vermaelen or the swaggering promise of Emmanuel Frimpong. And with emotions running high, some of them might even have said the wrong things – like how they truly felt about the direction of the club.
Wenger had, as always, appealed for calm and perspective. He lamented, as always, the knee-jerk world of the Premier League, in which "every defeat is absolutely a disgrace and an earthquake". But it said much that he was forced to field questions about whether he could envisage himself quitting. He cannot. The Frenchman offered a reminder that it was only the start of the season yet the coming week has the capacity to derail it for his club. The Champions League play-off second leg at Udinese on Wednesday is fraught with peril. An away goal would surely send Arsenal through but a big problem for Wenger's team so far has been in the final third, where penetration and cutting edge have, strangely, been absent. Then comes Sunday's visit to Old Trafford, where defeat would leave them with one Premier League point from a possible nine and swimming against the tide for the title.
Arsenal finished Saturday's game with 10 men after the ticking time-bomb that was Frimpong went off. Having gone for short sides at the barber's shop for an eye-catching full Premier League debut look, he always looked like leaving his side short after he was booked in the eighth minute for inexplicably getting in Jordan Henderson's face as the Liverpool midfielder went to take a throw-in.
Frimpong's lunge at Lucas Leiva on 70 minutes was ugly enough for a straight red, rather than a second yellow. He was given a standing ovation by the home crowd, who also got behind Samir Nasri, a surprise starter here despite his desire to leave. These are desperate times.
Kenny Dalglish immediately sent on Luis Suárez and Raul Meireles, below, who would be involved in both goals, while Wenger introduced Henri Lansbury for only his second Premier League appearance, for the dismal Andrey Arshavin. Wenger had given Premier League debuts to Carl Jenkinson and Ignasi Miquel, who came on for the injured Laurent Koscielny, while his team that finished included Nicklas Bendtner, another player he is prepared to sell.
The young players gave everything but there was, inevitably, a costly mistake when Miquel's attempted clearance, under pressure from Suárez, who had looked offside in the build-up, ricocheted off Aaron Ramsey for a freakish own-goal. Wenger stood accused of exposing too much inexperience to such a high-pressure game and it was worth considering that Gaël Clichy, Emmanuel Eboué and Denílson, three players he has moved on this summer, would surely have featured if they were still at the club.
"I don't think the decision on the offside depends on our players," Wenger said. "We were a bit young, I agree, and we looked a bit naive in some situations, I agree as well. But we have shown a great spirit and we were really unlucky. We didn't deserve to lose."
Wenger maintains that he will add only players who can improve the quality of his squad yet he appears to have lost confidence in Sébastien Squillaci, who was absent on Saturday because of a mystery calf problem. If top Premier League clubs need four central defenders, then the task to find someone better than Squillaci ought not to be beyond him. Unless he intends to rely on Miquel.
Robin Van Persie missed a glorious chance on 69 minutes but Liverpool should have been in front by then and, after Frimpong's dismissal, they found a way through. "It's always been a complaint about the bench at Liverpool," Carragher said, "but to have the quality we did to come on [Suárez and Meireles] was instrumental in us killing the game. It just shows that substitutes are massive."
Arsenal's need for established reinforcements is glaring.

Manchester City are ready to let Emmanuel Adebayor join Tottenham on a free transfer.
Two years after spending £25million to recruit the striker from Arsenal, the richest club in the world want to ditch the Togo striker and shed his £170,000-a-week wages.
But even on a free transfer, Spurs will shy away from a permanent deal. They are content to take *Adebayor on loan, with City subsidising the bulk of the 27 year-old's wages.
Over the next three years Adebayor's wages will cost City around £30m.

City are also refusing to pay around £3m in agents fees and that's why Samir Nasri's £25m recruitment from Arsenal has stalled.
The clubs agreed the transfer fee and Nasri *accepted City's offer of a five-year deal worth £180,000-a-week.
But Sunday Mirror Sport understands that City broke off negotiations when it became clear that Nasri's advisers wanted paying for making the deal happen.
Sources at the club last night insisted that the move could still take place.
But they have told Nasri and his advisers that they will not pay agency fees on top of a premium *transfer fee and wages.
Nasri, who has turned down Arsenal's offer of a new contract worth £90,000-a-week, featured in the Gunners side *beaten 2-0 by Liverpool at The Emirates yesterday.
Adebayor is in danger of being frozen out of City's plans and needs to escape the Eitihad Stadium.
Spurs boss Harry *Redknapp said: "It in the hands of the chairman. I spoke to him some time ago about Adebayor and I would like to bring him to White Hart Lane if we can do a deal with City. But it would only be on loan."
Spurs have a wage cap that has not exceeded £65,000 for several years and prevents them from even entertaining taking Adebayor on a permanent deal.

[h=1]Modric axed from Spurs team to face United[/h] Published 23:01 21/08/11 By Darren Lewis

Wantaway star Luka Modric has been axed from the Spurs team – with boss Harry Redknapp admitting he is mentally unfit to play.
Playmaker Modric is a top transfer target for London rivals Chelsea, who are ready to treble his wages to lure him away from White Hart Lane.
Despite Spurs chairman Daniel Levy claiming the Croat is not for sale "at any price", Redknapp spoke last week of the difficulties involved in keeping a player who knows he can earn much more elsewhere.
And last night Redknapp appeared to prepare the ground for Modric's departure by leaving him out of tonight's showdown with Manchester United.

Redknapp said: "He won't be with us for the United game. He has got a bit of an injury but, to be honest, it is more that his head is not quite right."
But Benoit Assou-Ekotto is far from fazed by the task at Old Trafford.
So much so that he can barely remember the names of the Red Devils' summer signings.
While the rest of English football sat up when United bought Ashley Young (below), Phil Jones and David De Gea, Assou-Ekotto barely noticed.
The Spurs full-back is not even bothered by the fact that his club have failed to win any of their last 24 meetings with United.
He still believes they are there to be shot at.
Assou-Ekotto said: "What's his name? Yeah, Ashley Young. We used to play against him when he was at Aston Villa and we did all right.
"So it will be the same against Manchester United. He's not better just because he has changed club.
"Young and Nani are good players but they are still human. I really don't care who I will play against."
He should. Spurs' last victory over United was a 3-1 success in May 2001 at White Hart Lane.
And it is 22 years since Tottenham last won at Old Trafford – a 1-0 victory in December 1989.
Despite Spurs' simple Europa League win at Hearts, Assou-Ekotto knows tonight will be very different.
He added: "I wish it would be so easy against United but it won't. They have some injured players and I hope this helps us."
Uncertain new keeper De Gea is without the experienced Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand in front of him as both are injured.
But Assou-Ekotto added: "The problem with Manchester is even when they miss some players and when they don't play well, they are still good."
He believes, however, that Spurs will target nervous De Gea.
"For sure, we will try to use this problem. But he will have a good defender in front of him in Vidic.''
Reminded that Vidic is out, he added: "Well, then we will do it!"

David De Gea, Manchester United's embattled goalkeeper, will be targeted by a Tottenham team ready to shoot on sight tomorrow night.
Sir Alex Ferguson will stand by De Gea, insisting: "He'll get the protection he needs at home."
But the visitors are aware that United's new *£18.3million goalie will be shell-shocked after conceding soft goals in the Community Shield at Wembley and last weekend's Premier League opener at West Brom.
The fact that United won both games has partially *papered over the De Gea cracks. But Spurs will be *aiming to exploit any sign of nerves from the 20-year-old Spaniard.

Spurs midfielder *Gareth Bale said: "It's obviously going to be nerve-racking for him to go to United and be in the first team, but he showed at Atletico Madrid and with Spain that he's a world-class keeper.
"If any keeper's having a bad time, you're going to test them and it's going to be no different. We're going to go to Old Trafford and give our all and test their whole team."
After the soft goal, West Brom followed up with a second-half physical *assault that had Ferguson and the United players fuming.
But Ferguson is adamant he has no qualms about keeping his summer signing in the *firing line against a side *intent on exploiting any fears or uncertainties.
The United boss is *confident De Gea can come through the ordeal, just as his greatest keeper, Peter Schmeichel, did after a mauling at *Wimbledon.
Ferguson said: "David will be fine. He just didn't get the protection from the challenges. He had an elbow in the face, the boy went under him – it was bad.
"It's disappointing not *getting the protection. But he's at home on Monday, so we won't have a problem. It's just away from home he might be subjected to things like that."
Fergie added: "Schmeichel did have the same baptism of fire.
"At Wimbledon, he was squealing like a pig for *protection. They were *battering lumps out of him.
"But David's still young and remember Edwin van der Sar was a tall skinny kid when he won his first European Cup."
Ashley Young's acclimatisation with the champions has been more assured. He played a part in both goals in the 2-1 win at Albion to *underline his potential for United.
"He's settled in quickly, some don't," Ferguson said. "It's not fazed him coming here. He got the maturity last season, so it was a good time to buy him."
While United face all their title challengers in the early weeks, Fergie contends neighbours City have a significantly less demanding programme.
He said: "For some reason, City have come out at the right side of the easier games. All the other top teams have really tough games against each other.
"If we get through this spell in a good position, we can kick on and be positive."

United chief executive David Gill met Lim last month to offer him the chance to purchase a chunk of the shares.

Lim had held talks with Liverpool – before losing out to John W Henry's New *England Sports Ventures.

Samuel Eto'o will become the highest paid player in the world today when he completes his £25m transfer to Russian club Anzhi.
And Inter Milan will now use the fee to try and sign Carlos Tevez or Diego Forlan.
The Cameroon striker, 30, was persuaded to join sign a staggering three-year contract worth £54m - and will live and train with the team in Moscow and only travel to Dagestan for matches.
Forlan's father Pablo claimed: "Diego's agent is in Milan for the negotiations and he is anxiously waiting for this situation to be resolved.

"However, as we all know, we are waiting for Inter to conclude the Eto'o sale. If that ‘triangle' with Eto'o is concluded, then it's practically certain Diego will end up at Inter."
