Abstract: This paper proposes the contours of an African theology of sustainable development in the context of Tanzania after more than two decades of umajaa (familyhood) policy. It explores four kernel notions involved in setting up such a theology: identity, freedom, participation and self-reliance. Within society, the churches are recognized as ‘important forces for development’ and as the biggest social movement in Tanzania’, e.g. in providing healthcare. Assigned to these churches is ‘a prophetic duty to the state’.
