Thecapital of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, is itself a very famoustourist place. It is located in the South western belt of India. Itis well connected with all the other cities through rail, road andair network. Thiruvananthapuram has a tropical climate due to itsproximity to the sea. Due to this the city has a pleasant climatethroughout the year. According to the legend, the city was associatedwith King Solomon. His ships were known to have landed in a portcalled Ophir. Right from 190 A.D. merchants have been visiting thisplace for trade of spices, sandalwood and ivory. The city is said tohave got its name from the deity at the Sree Anantha PadmanabhaswamiTemple. Thiruvananthapuram literally means the town of Anantha. Thetemple is one of the chief landmarks of the city. The temple is knownto be several thousands of years old, though there is no solidevidence to determine the history of the temple. In the 18[SUP]th[/SUP]century, the capital was transferred to this city fromPadmanabhapuram, from when the city rose to fame. The Lord of thistemple is known to be very powerful and many former kings of theTranvancore state had devoted themselves completely in the service ofthe Lord. Thiruvananthapuram has a number of tourist places some ofwhich are Kovalam beach, Napier Museum and Kuthiramalika Palace.
