Thinking about it, I'm actually compelled to agree with you, painfully as it is!

The folly of this unfocused thinking is in the encouraging of the trend (I wanted to say precedent but this is precedented). This thinking encourages a tepid press rather than one that is robust.

An analogy here is your good for nothing, foul mouthed neighbor.

This neighbor, being foul mouthed and good for nothing, is quite annoying.

Nevertheless he is a neighbor.

One day, bandits invade his house and burglarize him.

You cannot rejoice in that, because what happened to your neighbor is something bad.

You are to see the burglary as it is, and organize some neighborhood watch, engage the police etc to show that something is done to stop future burglaries, regardless who is the victim.

Else, you will embolden the bandits to come to your house next.

The issue here should not be "these are rags, they deserve it", but whether the "rags" were penalized justly or not.

If they were penalized justly, then the focus, for the rest of the papers, should be to not give the government an iota of legitimacy in shutting down other papers.

If they were penalized unjustly, regardless of the fact that they are "rags", the danger to freedom of expression is too great for civil society to rejoice gleefully with schadenfreude.

So if we are not having any sympathy for these papers, it should be for lack of journalistic integrity, not because they did not join this or that camp politically.

A shuttting down of any newspaper in Tanzania, for unjust reasons, constitutes a threat to freedom of expression to all media in Tanzania.

Even the much praised Jamiiforums.

A shutting down of any newspaper in Tanzania, for just reasons, constitutes a lesson to other media outlets in Tanzania.

Sadly, I do not see an analysis delving into the reasons, whether just or unjust, and the threat/ lesson the shutting down represents.

Without a doubt our media is mediocre to say the least but in the current diplorable situation of our country I challenge you Critical Mind and others who support you to mention 1 public system that can in anyway boast to uphold equal or better standards than our media at this point.
Hivyo kidogo nashangazwa na kubwabwajika kwako hapa kuiponda state ya media nchini wakati by comparison I can confidently claim it is a better functioning system than any other in our country as painfull as that fact is to accept.

What did you want the media to do after reporting numerous atrocities that the government and its elites are doing to this country!? Their power ends at reporting, hawana nguvu ya kukamata, kupeleka mahakamni, kuhukumu na kisha kutoa adhabu!!

Halafu your statements are self contradictory, at one point you claim the media to be under the power of elites who are in connection with the government halafu in another paragraph unasema media inatafuta public i.e. walalahoi sympathy ikiwa kwenye matatizo.
Our media is doing a much better job than any other "body" in TZ and it is utterly astonishing for you to claim we are better off without the one "body" that tries to do justice to the weak by atleast informing them of how they are being bled to death!
Bahati mbaya ninatumia simu, ila ningekua kwenye pc ningeenda quote by quote kusambaratisha post yako.

Request to Mods&Admin.

Kindly leave this thread here as we need to have an informed discussion on how our media and politcians have manipulated us for their own gain.

Waswahili wanasema mwenye macho...haambiwi ona. We all know that for the last couple of years, our politicians have set out to do something new and remarkable...yes, they've handed over many of the functions of our bunge for example, its role as the dominant source of information for many Tanzanians about the executive arm of the state - to our mediocre newspapers.

Indeed Tanzanian's modern politicians have awarded an ''almost'' constitutional role to the media by building it up as an alternative to state institutions(or the least that are worthy the title). Our representative ''democracy'' has steadily replaced by what a system of govt which has been anything but selfaggrandising, populist and of course contemptuous of Tanzania's traditional institutions and liberties, intolerant of the judiciary and more importantly hostile to the rule of law.
The problem here was with the government. It is the result of having a weak, irresponsible, incoherrent government that is incapable of serving its people and hence such voids as a result of incompetence are naturally filled by other "bodies".
Is our parliaments (bunge) role to be a dominant source of information to the country!!!!??? Kweli critical mind?
I dont think you fully understand the role of media and state in a country trying to practice democracy.
Lets not kid ourselves, we all know during this time (last 18 years) our mediocre press and uselessbroadcast media have normally failed to hold our politicians to account. The biggest disasters of my adult lifetime - The MV Bukoba fiasco, Mererani deaths, the EPA's, BOT TWIN TOWERS, DOCTORS STRIKES, ZANZIBAR FERRY DISASTERS, ATC, STATE HOUSE CORRUPTION, The invasions of Anjouan, the economic policy errors,- were all cheered on by none but the bulk of our own useless mainstream press.
What role was the media supposed to do, other than what it justly did by REPORTING!! What was left was for the defunct system to hold the leaders responsible and if not them then we the public were supposed to become vocal and demand those responsible to be held accountable! To put blame on the media for not holding leaders responsible is like blaming a doctor for a roof leakage!
Jamii Forums single handeldly has done more for this country than all the newspapers, radio and TV stations combined.
You are being over sensational here!
Now the rulers of the day have banned two rags and all hell has broken lose. Our not so clever journalists are looking for the sympathy from the public and I'm sure I speak for many that Tanzania's press as a whole is pretty mcuh a manifestation of corporate, financial and political dominance. Yes, on rare occasions, some of our useless politicians can be fiercely criticised in the media(there's often agenda behind), but only very rarely has Tanzania's press stepped in any meaningful sense into a role that we all can agree holds power to account or perhaps checks serious, ongoing abuse. Normally our press often aligns itself with the govt of the day and has always taken the side of the powerful (Mafisadi/the ruling elites) against the weak(walalahoi/the working class).
Self contradictory paragraph! Why should the media seek public sympathy if it is under the leadership of mafisadi?
So I will never lose sleep just because the Govt of the day has shut two rags and I wont care if all of them were shut. They are good for nothing.

The only hope Tanzania has are the netizens who will INFORM& EDUCATE the masses through twitter, whatsapp and more importantly JAMIIFORUM/MEDIA
God forbid the day that our nation becomes dependent on information from the above sources that warrant no need of proof or research to post! Yani kweli you see hope in social media where any nincampoop can post any rubbish without the slightest thought of being questioned let alone held responsible!! Duh!

I'm very pleased to see that Jamii Forums has become a force to be reckoned with when it comes to enlighten and inform wananchi about their rights and freedom of expression.
Big up JF. They may have shut down Mwananchi and Mtanzania newspapers, but they will never be able to shut down JF or online media sources

While i agree with CRITICAL MIND on some parts of his argument but i also disagree with him on others. It's true that most of our media have failed to deliver when it comes to investigative news reporting about economic policies, public fund misuse, corruption, questionable contracts signed between government figures and foreign investors.

Mkuu Critical Mind, nimesoma kidogo "graphology" just for the interest na sio darasani!, hivyo nimelisoma bandiko lako "graphologically!".

Kwanza nakupa pole, kwa sababu you have "frustrations" ukimuona mtu anazungumzia mabaya tuu, ujue ana frustrations, kwa kueleza mabaya tuu, anajifariji kisaikolojia!, ndicho unakifanya hapa!.

Ukimuona mtu anashangilia mwenzake kukutwa na mabaya, ujue anajaribu kuji console kisaikolojia kwa mabaya yaliyomkuta!.

Hii ni kwa sababu baadhi ya uliyoyasema sio kweli!, ila ili kujifariji, unamua kuona only one side of the coin, the dark side tuu!, the bright side wewe huioni!.

Ni kweli, broadcast media zetu hazijafikia level ya ABC, BBC, CNN, Sky au Al Jazeera lakini kwa level yetu tuna kidogo kizuri, japo hatuna watangazaji wa level ya Christine Amanpour, Larry King, Tim Sebastian etc, kwa level zetu, tunao watangazaji wazuri tuu and we are doing something good no matter how little it is but it is something na sio uselessbroadcast media!.

Kwenye mabaya ya CCM niliwahi kuomba tusiichukie kwa chuki, lets appreciate the little good they did, tuikatae kwa kushindwa kutufikisha pale tunapotaka kufika, na sio kuichukia just kwa kuichukia tuu!, vivyo hivyo kwa media yetu, tuilaani kwa mapungufu yake ili kuiboreshwa iwe bora, lakini pia leys incourage kwa mazuri yake no matter how little they are!.

Tuitendee haki media yetu japo nabii huwa hakubaliki nyumbani!.

Pasco.

tHANKS for your critical response. Myself I had more or less same opinions as yours until I decided to look at things from a different narrative. In recent years a powerful thesis has emerged or at least is being thrown around in Tanzania that the media are a hostile force in Tanzanian's public life. This narrative is taught in universities and journalism schools (TSJ et al). In addition it has formed the basis for numerous books and newspaper articles. And even strange enough it is believed by a relatively large number of intelligent people including many journalists.

But this view is not merely misleading to say the least but fundamentally untrue. I'm with the view that rather than being hostile to politicians and other public figures, Our media should be understood as a core part of the problem and governing machine.

If you drop by any newstand or watch TV or listen to majority of Radio stations i in Dar, Mwanza, Arusha, Dodoma, Tanga, Iringa, Mbeya etc you wont fail to notice that Tanzania's journalists will almost always favour the rich, powerful and glamorous over the poor, weak and unfashionable. Its not that this should come as a surprise to anyone after all by all means Tanzania is a capitalist state (lets call it a confused Capitalist state) largely controlled by corporate, government and financial interests. And most of these interests own or control a great deal of the media, so it is only natural that a client press has emerged to serve the shadowy forces that dominate our public life. I dare ask those arguing that Tanzania possess a "feral press" need to show us why some of the richest and most powerful men in Tanzania – The Mengis, Aga Khans, The Rostams etc – would be set on the destruction of political and other structures.

Unless some here live in the Matrix to believe and take thinks on face value.

FACT:

JAMIIFORUMS/MEDIA has done so much in informing Tanzanias in the last 8 years than all the print & broadcast media in Tanznaia combined.

It was even more embarrassing to read the media reports on Tanzania's involvement in the Congo. What we had were the usual cheap propaganda coming from our media and of course no one dared to question if our boys lives were worth the fight in that country. The end results were more Xenophobic headlines towards anyone whose name doesnt sound ''Tanzanian enough...'' In addition its worth mentioning that the the core relationship between Tanzania's politicians and the media owners is one of intense mutual fascination and collaboration. Throughout the 90's Tanzania's media has been dominated by the Reginald Mengi and somewhat Rostam/empire, which typically forms an alliance with the Government in power. During the Mkapa and early Kikwete administrations, Mengi personnel were incorporated as part of the government machine, and visa versa.(Betty Mkwasa, Salva Rweyemamu et al) . There is some reason to believe that the Mengi connection with government contributed to the general IPP Media sense of impunity. Our Ministers were aware of the extraordinary fact that the RICHMOND & EPA frauds was happening, yet appear to have taken no serious action until JAMIIFORUM leaked those documents.

Yet more incredible some members of a Energy Select Committee felt they were intimidated and threatened by some of our media which resorted to cheap personal attacks and yet nothing was done. Meanwhile Rostam owned papers took little notice of government criminality.

There is no question that this connection between our politicians and media, which unfortunately is invisible to the ordinary Mwananchi/Mlalahoi/working class voter or newspaper reader, has done great damage to the public interest. Unfortunately of late a great deal of what passes for news in Tanznaia is a manifestation of what we could call manipulative populism. Stories and narratives such as the recent Rwanda vs Tanzania (which was pretty much a non story) have been constructed through collaboration between our government and media machines. In these cases newspaper stories simply become a manifestation of power and the end results are the mediocre journalists and the media barons.

Certainly, kuna ki FM kinaanza kinakipindi chake cha ajabu, lakini redio zote daladala mpaka wanaojiita wasomi wanasikiliza, lakini utakachotoka nacho unashangaa. Jana mtu anasema ameoa mke wake white kutoka uchagani yeye kwao mbeya. Nilishangazwa sana. Mwingine anasema kianzishwe kikosi nje ya polisi ili kudhibiti utekaji. Nikashangaa Lanajua majukumu ya polisi ama hajui. Lakini ndio viredio vyetu. We still have a long way to think, act and move.

While i agree with CRITICAL MIND on some parts of his argument but i also disagree with him on others. It's true that most of our media have failed to deliver when it comes to investigative news reporting about economic policies, public fund misuse, corruption, questionable contracts signed between government figures and foreign investors.

The PROBLEM is Tanzania's public life is dominated by a culture of client journalism which is, by contrast, widely available and well-documented. The most obvious fact staring by any JF observer of the political scene in the face is not the hostility between our journalists and politicians. It is how close these two are. They live together, eat together, dine together, go to bed together. This is hardly surprising since so many of our most prominent politicians – Mkapa, Mkwasa, etc etc etc – are former journalists.

Our Politicians, Magogoni media handlers and journalists make identical assumptions and share a common language. They tend to be metropolitan/Dar Centric and at UD-educated (for their first degrees) typically with degrees in the arts rather than the sciences. In addition, they share a fascination with politics and media and have far more in common with each other than with ordinary voters. Ideological sympathy plays an important part, and this can cross conventional party lines (even though the main political parties..CHADEMA/CCM both have their own print media) but the fact still remains that Tanzania's most influential journalists (minus JENERALI ULIMWENGU and few of his likes) have tended to share the same "modernising" analysis as the dominant factions inside the 2 mainstream political parties, a position which involves scorn towards local activists and a learned, though often cynical, preoccupation with techniques of political manipulation and control especially during elections campaigns. The bottom line is political journalism in Tanzaniacannot be understood without an understanding of the role these friendships play.

Of course the 4 estate in Tanzania is pretty much a sham and we all know it.

That's true,Many of the journos we have today are more of artistic than scientific in their reporting obsessed more with selling than informing/educating people on particular fields like economy. But who to blame? It must be a government which designed this environment/situation to cage journos in to their own advantage.

The whole RWANDA vs TANZANIA debate was embarrassing to say the least but I digress...

By word of mouth....

Nilienda vijijini nikakuta watu wanapiga story ambazo source haiwezi kuwa radio...dont under estimate power of social media hasa kwa nchi ambayo karibu kila mtu mzima ana simu.
