The Arusha-based company said the innovation was of paramount importance for the oil type transformers which are cheaper in both procurement and maintenance by between 25 and 50 per cent compared to dry types.Tanelecs senior sales officer Fred Mpili said the new design has removed completely the drainage cock at the bottom, thus managing to lower oil theft as one has to open the transformer lid to accomplish the mission.
Its difficult to drain oil from the new design as one has to open the cover which is a process that takes time and requires trained technicians, Mr Mpili told the Daily News at the exhibition for East African Power Industry Convention.
He added: Dry transformers air cooled and exposing bare their copper materials thus becoming even more theft target compared to oil cooling type.According to the firm, transformers theft is not limited to Tanzania alone rather in Kenya, Uganda and Malawi.
The sales officer said currently Tanelec is dealing with ten power utilities in over ten countries in the bloc namely Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, South Sudan, Zambia, DRC, Mozambique, Rwanda and Burundi.
To meet the raising demand, the largest transformer manufacturer in the region, has increased capacity from 10 to 15 transformers a day and employed 200 permanent staff.
He said at the moment they are supplying about 2,000 transformers a year to Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco).Tanesco could have kept us (Tanelec) busy if were to order all transformers from us, he said, we have worked with Tanesco to develop products aimed at reducing energy theft, among other solutions.
Tanelec is producing pole and ground mounted distribution transformers ranging from 25 kilovolt-ampere (KVA) up to 3000KVA to 33 kilovolt (Kv) using proven technology under a licence with ABB.
Mr Mpili said Tanelec does not only manufacture and sell transformers but also offers service and repairs under its independent service shop that include tank, winding and core replacement, tap charger overhaul and transformer upgrading and refurbishment.
