Some people claim that eating sugar lead to hyperactivity and other behavior problems in children. They argue that children should follow a diet that limits these substances.

Hyperactivity means an increase in movement, often accompanied by impulsive actions, being easily distracted, and shorter attention span. Some people believe that children are more likely to be hyperactive if they eat sugar, artificial sweeteners, or certain food colorings. Other experts disagree with this.
Several studies have shown that sugar doesn’t make children more hyperactive. Some studies demonstrated that parents who thought their child was given sugar believed them to be more hyper even when they weren’t given sugar — demonstrating the misconception parents sometimes have.

However, sugar does affect behavior. A high-sugar breakfast has been shown to result in a severe deterioration in attention span compared with no breakfast or whole-grain cereal.
