It was a scene straight out of Wakaliwood.

A teacher reportedly gathered her skirt, jumped through a classroom window and disappeared into a nearby bush after school officials arrived to inspect Kabaale Public Primary School in Hoima District.

The dramatic escape unfolded on Monday after Hoima District Chairperson Uthuman Mugisha Kadiri visited the school and discovered that a teacher had allegedly abandoned her duties and hired a villager to teach her pupils in her absence.

The teacher, identified as Joseline Atugonza, is accused of paying Madrine Wembabazi Rahuma to report to school, teach the pupils and even sign the attendance register in her name.

Rahuma had reportedly gone a step further by staying in the school staff quarters, making the arrangement appear to have been running for some time.

However, the alleged scheme came crashing down during Mugisha’s inspection.

When Rahuma realised that officials were investigating the classroom, she reportedly jumped through a window and fled into a nearby bush, leaving the pupils and officials stunned.

Mugisha has since directed police to arrest Atugonza and the school head teacher over alleged absenteeism and the use of an unauthorised person to perform teaching duties.

The school’s deputy head teacher, who was found at the premises, has also recorded a statement with police as investigations continue.

Mugisha said absenteeism and misconduct among public servants undermine service delivery and deny communities the services they are entitled to receive.

The incident has renewed concerns about supervision and accountability in public schools, where teachers are entrusted with educating and shaping the future of children.

At Kabaale Primary School, however, Monday’s lesson briefly turned into an athletics event — with the stand-in teacher making an unexpected exit through the window.
