Uganda’s Parliament has confirmed that the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker for the 12th Parliament will take place on May 25, 2026, shortly after the completion of the MPs’ swearing-in ceremony and the first sitting of the new House.

The announcement comes as the newly elected legislators are currently being sworn in in phases from May 13 to 15, 2026, paving the way for the formal constitution of the 12th Parliament. Once all Members of Parliament have taken their oaths, they will proceed to elect new parliamentary leadership to steer the House for the next term.

The Speaker and Deputy Speaker positions are among the most powerful constitutional offices in Uganda, responsible for presiding over parliamentary debates, maintaining order, and guiding legislative business in line with the Constitution.

The current Speaker, Anita Annet Among, is expected to be among the key contenders in the upcoming leadership contest amid ongoing controversies surrounding her endorsement and allegations of corruption. It should be noted that the First Son, the Chief of Defence Forces and Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda has withdrawn his endorsement and support for her candidature
