Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth has officially been elected Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament after securing an overwhelming majority vote during the House’s first sitting held on Monday, May 25, 2026.

Oboth from the NRM won the race with 441 votes, defeating fellow contenders Paul Mwiru of the NUP, who garnered 60 votes, and Norbert Mao ( DP), who secured 15 votes.
The election marks a major political moment as Uganda ushers in a new parliamentary leadership following weeks of intense political maneuvering and speculation over who would take over the Speaker’s chair.
In his first remarks after the victory, Rt. Hon. Oboth pledged to lead Parliament with fairness and service, emphasizing unity and representation of all Ugandans.
The Speaker’s chair is not a throne, it is a servant post.” he remarked.
He also told Members of Parliament that his responsibility would be to ensure that the voices of more than 48 million Ugandans are “heard, protected, and respected” through cooperative leadership in the House.
The election was conducted during the inaugural sitting of the newly constituted 12th Parliament, with MPs casting votes in a process presided over at Kololo ceremonial grounds.
His election comes at a politically sensitive moment following months of turbulence surrounding former Speaker Anita Among, who has recently faced mounting pressure over corruption, illicit wealth accumulation, money laundering, and abuse of office allegations that triggered investigations, public scrutiny, and growing divisions within political circles.
