A TIMETABLE OF EVENTS IN NORTH- SOUTH SUDAN
[/U1947;Leaders of Souther Sudan's tribes meet in Juba and decided to unite with the North with application of federal rule system of government.
1954; Members of constituent Assembly (Parliament from both northen and southern Sudan agree on the unity of Sudan's territory and people and approve a federal rule and the South to have an autonomy system to manage its affairs
1955; First revolt and start of civil war
1956; Sudan gains its independence
1964; A round table confrence decides a system of Government for Southern Sudan. Southerm MPs ask for selfdetermination for the region
1968; The civilian Government is removed in a military coup
1969; Afresh coup places Numeiri in power
1972; A peace agreement is signed in Addis Ababa. South Sudan achieve partial self-governence
1983; Nuimeri introduces the Shariah law in Sudan leading to a new breakout of civil war in the South
1985; A popular uprising removes Nuimeri from power
1988; Agreement reached between John Garang andand Mohamed Osman Al Mirghani, leader of the Democratic Unionist Party to solve the problem of Southern Sudan peacefully
1989; Incumbet President Omar Bashir and his Islamic Front (NIC) take power in military coup
1997; The Government signs Khartoum Peace agreement with six Southern factions. A four-year southern state coordination council is formed
2005; The ruling National Congress Party (NCP) of Bashir and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement of Garang signed the comprehensive Peace agreement in Naivasha, Kenya, stipulating self-determination for the South and a referendum.
