Sir Elton John has sparked outrage among Christians in the United States after claiming Jesus was gay.
In an interview with US magazine Parade, John said he believes Jesus Christ was a "compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems".
His remarks have upset America's religious lobby, not known for its tolerance of diverging views, with one senior US Catholic complaining that Jesus had labelled a "sexual deviant".
In the wide ranging interview due to be published in full on Parade.com later today John, 62, spoke about drugs, fame and Christianity.
Talking about Jesus, he said: "On the cross, he forgave the people who crucified him. Jesus wanted us to be loving and forgiving. I don't know what makes people so cruel. Try being a gay woman in the Middle East you're as good as dead."
John, real name Reg Dwight, also discussed consummating his relationship with civil partner David Furnish and how the pair keep their love alive.
But it is his remarks regarding Jesus that appear to have stoked the most interest.
Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League a US Catholic civil rights organisation which says it aims to defend Catholicism said John was not in a position to pass comment.
"Jesus was certainly compassionate, but to say he was 'super-intelligent' is to compare the son of God to a successful game-show contestant," Donohue said.
"More seriously, to call Jesus a homosexual is to label him a sexual deviant. But what else would we expect from a man who previously said, 'From my point of view, I would ban religion completely.'"
Stephen Green, director of right-wing US Christian group Christian Voice, dismissed the claim as "rubbish".
"The Bible says Jesus was without sin and that rules out homosexuality," he said. "This is a desperate cry for attention."
In Britain, the response was somewhat more moderate.
A spokesman for the Church of England said: "Sir Elton's reflection that Jesus calls us all to love and forgive is one shared by all Christians."
"But insights into aspects of the historic person of Jesus are perhaps best left to the academics," he told the BBC
