The Tanzanian shilling has rallied to become one of the top performing currencies in the world, due mainly to record high gold prices and a surge in inflows of U.S. dollars from agriculture, tourism, and transport sectors.

The central bank quoted the shilling trading at 2,578/2,604 levels today, up from 2,586/2,612 at the start of March.

The Director of Financial Market at the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), Emmanuel Akaro, said the outlook for the Tanzanian shilling is positive throughout the year, bucking the historical trend of depreciation of the local currency during the first half of a calendar year.

Akaro, who also holds a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation with over 20 years of experience as a central banker, breaks down the factors behind the strengthening of the shilling against the U.S. dollar in this Q&A interview with The Citizen.

Haiwezekani ianguke mpaka ardhini halafu iendelee kuanguka tu.

Hata ukiangalia Stock Market inavyopanda au kushuka, inaweza kushuka katika short term trend huku inapanda kwenye long term, au vice versa. It is never a straight line.There are constant corrections in the markets.

Kitu cha muhimu ni kuangalia how far up the shilling will bounce before going back down, and how far down it will go before going up, what the general trend will be.

Na hapo tusiangalie thamani ya currency, tuangalie strategy ya uzalishaji, balance of trade, export strategy, debt management, efficiency maximization, labor utilization. Hivyo ndivyo vitu vinasababisha uchumi uwe na tija.

The shilling can have an upward short term trend while the long term trend is downward, and vice versa.

We need to establish a level and know what is the economic strategy for that level.

There is a strategy for every level of currency strength.

But, do we have any?
