Shift of Capital to Dodoma: A latent curse of a lost cause?

In October 1973 the people of Tanzania decided by referendum? - to shift the National Capital of Tanzania from Dar-es-Salaam to Dodoma, the geographical centre of the country, in Central Tanzania. It was also decided ( by referendum?) that Dar-es-Salaam remain the chief port and commercial capital of the nation.

Is this true - did the people of Tanzania ever hold a referendum ?

The Capital Development Authority was formed to implement the decision to transfer the capital of Tanzania to Dodoma.

It is now over 35 years and Dar-es-Salaam remains not only the Chief Port and Commercial Capital but the undisputed Centre of Government Business. Meanwhile billions are set aside each financial year to this ghost endeavour with no end in sight and government officials keep on criss-crossing between the two centers spending millions daily. This project has been a breeding ground for millionaires and billionaires (including our current speaker of the house) with little or no sign of ever letting up. May be initially there was really a political will to see through this project but now it has been turned into just another clever plot to loot the country's coffers as has been the practice of our ruling clique. The impunity of our leaders will never cease to amaze me, when will it ever stop ?

Mimi sijui hata kwanini hawasemi to wame give up on that idea. Wenzetu Nigeria haikuchukua muda mrefu kiasi hicho kuhamisha makao makuu toka Lagos kwenda Abuja. Maandalizi gani hayo yanayo chukua karibia miaka 40? Yani Tanzania tupo slow kwenye kila kitu.

Hii hadithi ya kuhamishaakao makuu ni kama ya alfulela u lela yaani siku elfu na moja. Awamu ya kwanza Ikulu ilijengwa Chamwino na Mzee alikuwa akienda sana huko. Awamu ya pili na sherehe kubwa ikafanyika ya Ikulu kuhamia DOm, na mkuu akapewa shamba akalima zabibu. Tulioneshwa kwenye magazeti. Awamu ya tatu na ya nne zimekuwa ni ahadi za kuzolea kura za urahisi. Sijui labda tumpate rahisi wa Kigogo anaweza kusukuma mambo kama vile daraja la Mkapa, double roads kutoka Cahlinze, mradi wa umeme vijijini Kilimanjaro(Mwanga na Same)

Hiyo referendum waliyoitangaza mwaka jana ndio gear ya kuleta hiyo hoja ya kutangaza kushindwa kwa kisingizio kuwa wananchi wamekataa
