Is this true - did the people of Tanzania ever hold a referendum ?In October 1973 the people of Tanzania decided by referendum? - to shift the National Capital of Tanzania from Dar-es-Salaam to Dodoma, the geographical centre of the country, in Central Tanzania. It was also decided ( by referendum?) that Dar-es-Salaam remain the chief port and commercial capital of the nation.
It is now over 35 years and Dar-es-Salaam remains not only the Chief Port and Commercial Capital but the undisputed Centre of Government Business. Meanwhile billions are set aside each financial year to this ghost endeavour with no end in sight and government officials keep on criss-crossing between the two centers spending millions daily. This project has been a breeding ground for millionaires and billionaires (including our current speaker of the house) with little or no sign of ever letting up. May be initially there was really a political will to see through this project but now it has been turned into just another clever plot to loot the country's coffers as has been the practice of our ruling clique. The impunity of our leaders will never cease to amaze me, when will it ever stop ?The Capital Development Authority was formed to implement the decision to transfer the capital of Tanzania to Dodoma.
