A Senior One student of Lake Bunyonyi Community Vocational Secondary School in Kabale District is feared drowned in Lake Bunyonyi after reportedly going swimming with a friend.

Roland Ampeire, a boarding student and son of James Tayebwa of Kashenyi Village, Butenfa Parish, Rubaya Sub-county, reportedly drowned around midday in the Bufuka area of Mwendo Parish, Kitumba Sub-county.

His father said the school informed him that Ampeire had gone to the lake with a friend while learning to swim using a closed jerrycan as a floating aid. The jerrycan allegedly slipped from his hands, causing him to lose balance and drown.

Tayebwa has questioned how a boarding student was able to leave the school premises and go swimming without the knowledge or supervision of school authorities, accusing the school of negligence.

Local divers and swimmers were still searching for Ampeire’s body by press time. Police and the school management had not yet issued an official statement.

The incident has renewed concerns about swimming safety on Lake Bunyonyi, especially among young people with limited swimming skills and without proper supervision.
