Police in Kwania District have arrested two student prefects from Abongomola Seed Secondary School over the alleged murder of a fellow student accused of stealing a jerrycan and bucket from the boys’ dormitory.
The suspects, identified as Douglas Egaru and Ivan James Okello, reportedly assaulted 21-year-old Solomon Lukori, a Senior Four student, at around 5am on Wednesday after he was allegedly caught stealing the items.
According to police, Lukori, a resident of Emeng Village in Apolika Parish, Chawente Sub-county, attempted to flee from the angry students but was chased down about 400 metres from the school compound, where he was severely beaten.
He was later taken back to the school premises and placed in the staffroom building, where he succumbed to his injuries.
North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema said homicide detectives and Scene of Crime Officers visited and documented the scene, while statements were recorded from Lukori’s parents, school administrators, and other witnesses.
A fellow student, Solomon Ocen, said Lukori had allegedly been found with the stolen jerrycan and bucket and was suspected of planning to sell them outside the school.
Alex Opara, a member of the school’s Board of Governors and the area LC5 councillor, condemned the incident and called for increased community policing in schools to prevent violent acts among students.
