North Korea has wanted to make these powerful bombs, that can cause devastating damage, for a long time. Fortunately for them, they have succeeded and their leader is not the type of person that bows down to Western power. To prove that he is fully prepared to face any possible challenge or attack from other countries, he went in a Military parade where all forms of weapons were displayed, which brought fear into the heart of other world leaders, and that was his primary target.

This was partly to show its military strength, but also to protect itself because it believes some countries want to attack it.
There are two key items involved in firing a nuclear weapon - a missile to travel to the target, and a weapon to cause damage.

There are concerns that North Korea is close to having missiles which one day might be able to hit targets in neighbouring countries, and possibly even some parts of the USA.

In August 2017, North Korea fired a missile over northern Japan for the first time. It then crashed into the sea without hurting anyone.
The country has also been testing weapons.

The size of the latest test carried out by North Korea was really big - equivalent to a 6.3 magnitude earthquake.

This has made people in neighbouring countries fear that war could break out in the region.

The United States and its Asian allies regard North Korea as a grave security threat. North Korea has one of the world’s largest conventional military forces, which, combined with its missile and nuclear tests and aggressive rhetoric, has aroused concern worldwide. But world powers have been ineffective in slowing its path to acquire nuclear weapons.

While it remains among the poorest countries in the world, North Korea spends nearly a quarter of its gross domestic product (GDP) on its military, according to U.S. State Department estimates. Its brinkmanship will continue to test regional and international partnerships aimed at preserving stability and security. Recent U.S.-North Korea summits have deepened direct diplomacy. But the negotiations so far demonstrate that the dismantling of North Korea’s arsenal will remain a lengthy and challenging process.

North Korea is a desperately poor country led by a desperately misguided regime. The threat North Korea poses is serious, but not an imminent one to the U.S. homeland. So let’s not make things worse by scaring ourselves and adding to the risk of another Korean War.
