Police in Kawempe Division are holding a school director for negligence after the death of a four year old child at a local daycare facility.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Rachael Kawala, confirmed the arrest on Monday, April 20, 2026. She identified the suspect as Aluku Elizabeth, the director of Portless Kindergarten and Daycare located in Kawanda, Chivulu Cell, Nabweru Division.
According to police, the tragic incident occurred on April 10, 2026, when the child, who was enrolled in middle class, reportedly fell into a saucepan containing hot tea while at the school premises.
Preliminary findings indicate that the child sustained severe burn injuries to the lower part of the body. He was rushed to a health facility in Kampala for emergency treatment but later succumbed to the injuries on April 15.
Police investigations suggest that negligence may have played a significant role in the incident. Authorities revealed that at the time of the accident, no teacher was present in the classroom to supervise the children.
“By the time of the incident, there was no teacher in the class. They had all gone to another room,” Kawala stated, adding that the case is currently being handled as suspected neglect.
The arrest of the school director comes as part of ongoing efforts by police to establish accountability and determine the exact circumstances surrounding the child’s death. Investigators are examining safety procedures at the school, particularly how hazardous items such as hot liquids were handled in areas accessible to young children.
Police have issued a strong warning to school administrators, teachers, and caregivers to prioritize child safety at all times.
“This incident should be a lesson to us,” Kawala said. “Schools must secure their cooking areas and avoid bringing hot foods or drinks like tea and porridge into classrooms where children are unsupervised.”
She further revealed that police fire and rescue teams will soon begin inspections of school kitchen facilities and general safety compliance measures across institutions to prevent similar tragedies.
