Rwanda ranked 2nd in internet speed

Rwanda has been ranked second country with the fastest broadband Internet download in Africa, coming next to Madagascar; according to report released this march 2014 by Speed test service provider Ookla, According to the ranking based on Household Download Index findings, Madagascar had 11.53Mbps, Rwanda 7.65Mbps, Namibia 7.56 Mbps, Kenya 6.63Mbps, Ghana 5.57Mbps and Libya 5.38Mbps.

On the world scene, the report indicated that Hong Kong ranked top 72.49Mbps, followed by Singapore 58.84Mbps, and Rwanda was ranked in position 91 globally. Rwanda's neigbours also ranked as follows: 91. Kenya in position 101 with 6.63Mbps; Tanzania 122 with 5.17Mbps and Uganda in position 158 with 3.39Mbps, while DR Congo came in 188 position with 1.02Mbps, but Burundi wasn't ranked due to lack of data. Apparently, Rwanda's global and continental positioning has dropped.

In 2012, Rwanda displaced Ghana to become the top country with the fastest broadband Internet speed in the continent, with download speeds of up to 7.28 Mbps from 3.28 Mbps six months ago, ranking it 65th in the world.The improvement in Rwanda's broadband speed is a result of World Bank-funded broadband projects that connected the country to many international undersea cables. The country currently relies on three submarine fibre optic cable systems for internet connection such as the East Africa Submarine Cable System (EASSy), The East African Marine Systems (TEAMS) and SEACOM through local telecommunication companies and Internet Service Providers (ISP's).

To boost its broadband services, in June 2013, the Government of Rwanda and KT Corporation (KT), South Korea's largest telecommunications provider, signed an initial 25 year term shareholders agreement to establish a Joint Venture (JV) Company to deploy a high-speed (4G LTE ) broadband network to cover 95 per cent of the population in three years. Rwanda continues to implement a rapid succession of creative initiatives towards its policy goal to transform Rwanda into a knowledge-based society, using ICT as a key enabler. These initiatives include 3,000 km of the national fibre optic infrastructure completed in 2010. Rwanda ranks top in East Africa and 7th in Africa among countries with active mobile-broadband subscriptions per 100 inhabitants in 2011, according to the United Nations Broadband Commission for Digital Development 2012 report.

As of September 2013, Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority, figures show that 15.8 per cent (or 1,674,053 subscribers) of the population are connected to the Internet. This is an increase from 1,324,409 Internet subscribers in September 2012. Ookla is a global leader in broadband testing and Web-based network diagnostic application. Based on millions of recent test results from Speedtest.net, the NetIndex compare and ranks consumer download speeds around the world.

The way I see this development for Rwanda, yes they tried and there is positive development. But why compare Rwanda and Tanzania? The total number of people utilizing the service in the whole country of Rwanda is equal to the total number of people available in Dar only. My take, we far and very far when compared to Rwanda

You see this list where is the US? second! And what percentage? 78% less than a number of countries that did not invent internet!
what i want to imply here is the internet speed is a wastage of resources in Rwanda a country that produces less than 10,000 graduates a year! A country that is neither a business hub to need that high internet i.e. in ebanking! A country that has no telemedicine or say a medical hub to convey the technology or a logistical or conference hub to need sophisticated communication but a bunch of students in rural area with toy laptops without electricity! This is a complete wastage of scarce resources to a country that media freedom is suicidal and depends on both Tanzania and Kenya for fiber optic connection!

Mnasema wamefanikiwa kwa sababu ni nchi ndogo, mbona Burundi haipo hata kwenye takwimu. kwani na wenyewe si nchi ndogo kama rwanda.

Mbona serikali yenu imeshindwa kuhakikisha internet kwenye mji wa biashara Dar ina speed na reliable... mpaka leo tuna spidi ya konokono.. matajiri ndio wanaoweza kuaford fast internet.
