When we reference works in our own writing, we are engaging in a good and ethical academic practice. Our quality of writing and our ability to reference, tend to become a representation, of how we think, a representation of us as persons, as academic subjects, as scholars, and ultimately, a representation of us as researchers. The first few pages of our writing and how well we reference according to the chosen conventions, give an impression of us to whoever is reading, assessing and examining our work. Sometimes you can have the best ideas in your head and in your writing, and you may be referring to good research but if you are not consistent or applying the referencing conventions correctly, then that gives a bad image to the researcher. It gives the impression to the reader or examiner that if you are sloppy with your writing and references, then maybe even your ideas are sloppy and they lack academic rigour. And you don’t want that.
So
👨🎓Students: How do you feel about referencing?
👨🏫 Supervisors: How you feel about ‘bad’ referencing?
👨🏫Supervisors: How do you feel about ‘good’ referencing?
