Isco
is doing his best to fuel a debate which will reach its peak when James rejoins the team. His performances at the beginning of this pre-season do not resemble those of a bit-part player, but of a footballer who should be an undisputed starter, in light of what he has been doing out on the pitch so far. It looks like Rafa Benítez is going to have a tough call to make.

Against City the Spaniard was Real Madrid's best player once again, and he is still not operating in his favoured position. The new placement for Gareth Bale means that he has to line up on the right, but not even that is stopping him. Even starting on the flank, Real Madrid's number 22 is capable of dictating the play and directing every move made by his teammates. He is no slouch at the back either, proving himself to be a player who has no issues sacrificing himself for the team. Currently, Isco is an all-round player who has started the season on scintillating form.

Benítez gave him 74 minutes and he made the most of them by setting the pace of his team's play, offering the fans shimmies, dummies and impossible ball control, and providing his teammates with two assists.

Real
and United's history of recent transfer struggles helps explain the De Gea stand-off.

Rewind back to 2nd July 2003. Up on a stage at the Bernabéu, Florentino Perez and Alfredo Di Stéfano introduced David Beckham as a Real Madrid player. That day was a watershed for Florentino. King David was the Midas who had helped turn Manchester United into a money-making machine. The English icon's golden touch continued in Madrid, leaving United to rue letting Beckham leave for 25 million euros, less than a Fábio Coentrão, and it was all down to Sir Alex Ferguson.

The longest transfer soap opera in football history
On 6th July 2009, over 70,000 packed out the Bernabéu to welcome Cristiano Ronaldo. His signing put an end to a several-year pursuit that had become the longest soap opera in football history.

Di María, the payback that backfired
United finally got their own back, or so they thought, by pinching Ángel Di María for an initial 75m euros plus up to 5m euros in add-ons, but the Argentine's first year in Manchester was a let-down.

Real ask after De Gea, United counterattack
Although officially the two clubs claim to have an amicable relationship, in actual fact Cristiano's move sparked a cold war between the Bernabéu and Old Trafford. So, when the Glazers found out about the verbal agreement between Real and De Gea at the end of last season, they drew up a plan to avoid history repeating itself at any cost. It is not a matter of money, but rather of pride.

Bale and Ramos enter the equation
After their flirtations with Gareth Bale went unrequited, United responded to the De Gea news by making Sergio Ramos a bumper offer worth 11m euros a season. This masterstroke was one in the eye for Florentino, with the 'Décima' hero tempted as a result of the breakdown of his relationship with the 'Los Blancos' president.
