Real claim their long-awaited ninth​


Real Madrid have won their ninth European Cup in basketball and their first in 20 years, by beating Olympiakos at home 78-59.

The final was an exciting game, which 'Los Blancos' managed to win with a mix of brawn, brain and brilliance.
It was a tense and evenly-matched duel, much more so than the final score might suggest. There were excellent defending moves, astute decisions made by the team coaches, and above all great performances by all present.

Jaycee Carroll was Real's highest scorer with 16 points, followed by an on-form Andrés Nocioni. Indeed, the Argentine was named MVP of the Final Four.

Pablo Laso's men have put an end to twenty years in the wilderness, as the last European championship that they won was against Zaragoza in 1995. Despite this title drought, Real, with nine European trophies in the bag, have won the competition the most number of times, followed by CSKA Moscow, Panathinaikos and Maccabi, with six each.

When Real Madrid and Olympiacos contested the 2013 Euroleague final, Vassilis Spanoulis explained afterwards that the Greek side triumphed simply because they were hungrier. The reverse was true tonight at Madrid’s Palacio de los Deportes when it was third time lucky for Pablo Laso’s team, who were crowned champions of Europe for the third time in club history, lifting the long-waited ‘Novena’.
In fact, the party atmosphere really started getting into full swing in the morning when Madrid’s youth team scooped the Junior Euroleague after beating Red Star – a victory which impelled the senior side to go all out for a trophy which has eluded them for 20 years.

Then the big game got underway in a packed Palacio with both sets of fans in full throng. Lojeski took over the role of Spanoulis (10 points in six minutes...) as Olympiacos confidently strode to a 21-15 first quarter run. That was the moment Andrés Nocioni appeared. Madrid brought the Argentine on board precisely for his vast experience and it came right to the fore, sometimes in a bad way (the odd body block) but mostly in a good way (practically everything else he did). He lifted the team and made the Palacio raise the roof while Ayon was off-court (two personal fouls in quick succession). The Greeks taking a slender two-point lead into the second quarter.
Maciulis brought Laso’s team back level from the free-throw line in a 20-7 run which enabled the hosts to go in leading 35-28 on the half-time buzzer.

Olympiacos chipped away at Madrid’s lead until they were one point in front midway through the third quarter. Laso introduced Jaycee Carroll which proved to be a masterstroke; the North American racked up 11 points on the trot, including three straight threes. Nocioni followed suit the pulled out an extraordinary block – just as he had in the semi-final to end as the MVP of the final with 12 points, seven rebounds and an index rating of 18. And it was largely down to that, that ‘La Novena’ finally arrived

Btw Van Gaal today almost confirmed that De Gea is joining Real Madrid next season :

“There was nothing left to say. I watch the basketball team a lot and always visit the dressing room, just as I do with the football team. But today was extra special because the players knew this was the dream of every Real Madrid supporter. For example, Nocioni said: 'I came here for this'. He came here to win the European Cup and he has done just that”.

“Celebrating at home is an extra special source of motivation. We are extremely satisfied and I believe the Palacio and the fans helped us, as they always do whenever we have a basketball game”.

The junior team
“I have followed them whenever I have had the chance. They are a spectacular team, a real once off and they will end up playing with great Spanish and NBA clubs. I hope we get to enjoy watching them playing with Real Madrid”.
