On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni hosted a high-level South African delegation led by businessman Mr. Andile Ramaphosa at Nakasero State Lodge for a courtesy call centered on strengthening agricultural and livestock partnerships between Uganda and South Africa.

The delegation presented two key proposals aimed at boosting Uganda’s livestock sector and addressing challenges in agricultural inputs. The primary initiative involves collaboration with the National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) and the Regional Service Centre Initiative at Namunkekera Farm.

This partnership would focus on regulated breeding, harvesting, and export of prized Ankole cattle genetics to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region and beyond.

Ankole cattle, known for their majestic long horns and resilience, hold significant cultural, economic, and adaptive value in Uganda’s pastoral systems. The proposal seeks to professionalize their genetics management, enhance value addition, and position Uganda as a regional exporter of high-quality livestock genetics.

A second proposal outlined the establishment of a Build-Operate-Transfer (B.O.T.) laboratory to tackle the pervasive issue of counterfeit agro-inputs, such as fake seeds and fertilizers, which continue to undermine farmer productivity and national food security.

President Museveni warmly received the ideas, thanking the delegation for their initiative.

“I welcome these ideas… The Government will study the proposals and support initiatives that advance Uganda’s socio-economic transformation,” he stated.
