“I will be here again in 2036” — Museveni on returning to Ankole Revival Site

President Yoweri Museveni has pledged to return to St. John’s Cathedral in Ruharo, Mbarara, in 2036, as he reflected on his first visit to the historic site 77 years ago.

Museveni made the remarks on Sunday as he concluded the five-day East African Revival Ankole Convention at the cathedral, where Christians and leaders gathered to commemorate the legacy and impact of the East African Revival movement in the region.

Recalling his personal connection to the site, Museveni said he first visited the cathedral as a young boy in 1949 and had now returned after 77 years. He described the return as a divine blessing, given the important role the Revival played in shaping the social and moral fabric of communities in Ankole.

“2036, I will be here and I will come,” Museveni said, signalling his intention to return for another milestone in the Revival’s history.

The President commended the East African Revival for helping transform communities that had struggled with alcoholism, adultery and superstition, saying the movement encouraged people to embrace education, hygiene, discipline and strong family values.
He also highlighted the Church’s continued contribution to community development, including efforts to promote coffee farming and environmental conservation.

The convention also highlighted efforts to preserve the history of the Revival, with plans for the construction of a Revival Museum to document and showcase its heritage for future generations.

Museveni conveyed greetings from his wife, Janet Museveni, and thanked the bishops and church leaders for organising the anniversary celebrations and keeping the legacy of the Revival alive.

The President's participation marked both a historical reflection and a celebration of the Revival's continuing influence in Ankole, while his pledge to return in 2036 added a personal dimension to the commemoration.
