A Uganda Police Officer in Kasese went wild shooting at eight people, one of them, a ten-year old dying on spot and four other children sustaining serious injuries.

The incident occurred at around 11pm at a funnel vigil in Kaghorwe village in Kyabarungira Sub-county in Busongora North.
Kyabarungira Sub-county Chairperson, Mr Samuel Kithawithe identified the
deceased as Isaac Masereka.

The injured included four children and four women all residents of the same area who were shot at while fleeing the gunshots. The children are; Mbambu 6, Felex Bwambale 8, Wilbert Bwambale 8 and Juliet Biira 14.

The injured women include Betty Biryande 40, Grace Masika 20, Uniya
Muhindo 47. They are admitted at Kilembe Hospital.

Rwenzori region police spokesperson, Lydia Tumushabe confirmed the incident, saying the suspect, only identified as Constable Bainomugisha has been arrested and that investigations into the matter have commenced.

“We have launched investigations to establish the circumstances under which the suspect went wild and decided to open fire on innocent members of the public,” Tumushabe said.

According eyewitnesses, the victims were among the mourners who had gathered at the home of
Mr Joules Tsongo a resident on Kaghorwe village who had passed away during the day.

The mourners were sitting around a fire place when they saw a police officer arriving at the
funeral place.

“Without saying anything, the police officer whom we thought had come
to provide security opened fire, sending the mourners in disarray,” said Edison Biryande, one of the mourners.
Biryande explained that no man was shot because they took cover while women and children tried to escape.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the officer had been angered by some villagers in the area earlier in the day at a village football match.
