National Unity Platform (NUP) councillor for Bufumira, Frank Ssekabunga, has been arrested and detained at Bufumira Police Station under circumstances that have sparked political debate in the lead up to local electoral activities.

According to his wife, Irene, Ssekabunga was arrested at around 9:00pm at Ssemawundo Landing Site while allegedly deploying election agents for NUP candidate Irene Nampala.
She claims that the arrest followed a confrontation with the District Internal Security Officer (DISO), who allegedly ordered the councillor to stop criticizing President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and remove his NUP T-shirt. According to the account, Ssekabunga refused and was subsequently taken into custody.
The arrest comes just hours after Tanga Odoi, the chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, publicly commended NUP members for raising concerns about suspected ballot box irregularities during the ongoing electoral process.
Odoi said the complaint helped election officials identify what was ultimately determined to be a human error by a recording officer, dismissing allegations of deliberate manipulation.
He expressed confidence in the transparency of the NRM Electoral Commission and encouraged party supporters to participate in the electoral process.
