Police on Thursday mounted roadblocks along major roads leading into Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD), disrupting public transport and leaving thousands of commuters stranded as the country marked the anniversary of the June 25, 2024, anti-Finance Bill protests.

The roadblocks were established along key routes, including Mombasa Road, Thika Road, Lang'ata Road, Waiyaki Way, and roads linking Nairobi to Athi River and Mlolongo. Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) and private motorists faced significant restrictions, with many unable to access the city centre during the morning rush hour.

The closures resulted in widespread transport disruptions, forcing some commuters to walk long distances or seek alternative means of transport. In several areas, passengers were seen boarding trucks and lorries after matatu services were interrupted by the heightened security measures.

The security operation comes amid nationwide demonstrations commemorating the Gen Z-led protests of June 2024, which culminated in the storming of Parliament and left dozens dead. Authorities have cited security concerns and the need to prevent criminal elements from infiltrating peaceful demonstrations.

Government officials have maintained that while peaceful protests are protected under the Constitution, law enforcement agencies will continue to enforce security measures to safeguard public property, businesses, and critical institutions throughout the demonstrations.
