Gen. Kahinda Otafiire has questioned the implementation of Uganda’s digital number plate project, suggesting that traffic monitoring technology could have been incorporated into number plates belonging to businessman Wavamunno.

“We could have added the traffic monitoring thing to Wavamunno’s number plates,” Otafiire said while appearing before Parliament’s Committee on Physical Infrastructure.

The committee, chaired by Mwine Mpaka, is questioning former government officials over the implementation, pricing and value for money of the digital number plate project.

Otafiire, who was Minister of Internal Affairs when the project was rolled out, appeared alongside former Works and Transport Minister Gen. Katumba Wamala, Winstone Katushabe and other officials.

The parliamentary inquiry is examining decisions surrounding the project, including its implementation and the value delivered by the technology.

Otafiire’s remarks raised questions about the features considered during the development of the digital number plate system and whether additional capabilities, such as traffic monitoring, could have been incorporated.

The committee’s engagement with the former officials is part of Parliament’s scrutiny of the project and the decisions made during its implementation.
