Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi wine the prominent Ugandan opposition figure and leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has announced that he has temporarily left the country. This comes after nearly two months spent in hiding following the disputed January 2026 presidential election.

In a statement released today, Bobi Wine addressed "Fellow Ugandans and friends of Uganda," recounting the events since the election. He claimed that President Yoweri Museveni "yet again usurped the will of the people" and declared himself president "on gunpoint." Official results from the Electoral Commission showed Museveni winning with approximately 71.65% of the vote, extending his rule beyond four decades, while Bobi Wine received around 24.72%. The opposition leader and his party rejected the outcome as fraudulent, citing widespread irregularities.

A day after the results were announced, Bobi Wine said the military raided his home in an attempt to harm him. He managed to escape and went into hiding. During this period, he credited "the people of Uganda" for sheltering and protecting him despite intense efforts by the regime to locate him. These efforts reportedly included raids on colleagues' homes, roadblocks, vehicle checks, arrests and dismissals of police officers linked to his campaign, searches of his village home, and a siege on his residence.

Bobi Wine described the past two months as a time of evasion amid ongoing pressure from authorities. Today, he revealed his decision to leave Uganda briefly for "important work."

"Over the next few weeks, I will engage with our friends and allies all over the world before returning to Uganda to continue the push for freedom and democracy!" he stated. He urged supporters to "remain focused and united" during his absence.

While in hiding, Bobi Wine had spoken out against the election results through videos and interviews, refusing to challenge them in court due to distrust in the judiciary. He has consistently called for peaceful resistance and international attention to Uganda's political situation.

Bobi Wine emphasized that his exit is temporary and reaffirmed his commitment to returning to advance the cause of democracy in Uganda. Supporters and observers will watch closely for developments in the coming weeks as he engages with the international community.
