Petroleum (crude oil) is not a mineral.

Crude oil is a hydrocarbon.

Crude oil's origin come from dead ancient shallow marine microorganisms (diatoms) deposited in an oxygen depleted sedimentary environment which prevents decay and preserves the organism's energy potential that can mature into crude oil over millions of years with the proper temperature and pressure.

Minerals must meet the following criteria:

• Inorganic (Oil is organic)
• Naturally occurring
• Solid (Oil is a liquid)
• Have a specific chemistry (Oil is mixture of various hydrocarbons with varying chemistry)
• Internal crystalline structure

The funny thing is, while Petroleum is not a mineral, it can contain mineral particles such as sand, and sand often contains Quartz which is a mineral.
