Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has moved to deepen its political and diplomatic relationship with Venezuela’s governing United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) following bilateral talks held in Kampala.
The meeting, hosted at the NRM headquarters on Kyaddondo Road, brought together senior officials from both parties to discuss areas of cooperation ranging from political ideology and governance to trade, investment and international solidarity.
Speaking after the discussions, NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong said the engagement reflects the growing relationship between the two ruling parties, noting that both movements share similar historical struggles centered on sovereignty, liberation and resistance against foreign interference.
Todwong emphasized the importance of strengthening South-to-South cooperation, adding that Uganda and Venezuela can benefit from closer collaboration in agriculture, energy, youth empowerment and leadership development.
Leading the Venezuelan delegation, Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Rander Peña praised the NRM for its historical role in political transformation and liberation movements, describing the party as an important force in Africa’s political landscape.
The Venezuelan delegation, representing President Nicolás Maduro’s ruling PSUV party, also expressed commitment to expanding exchanges between the two countries through political training programs, economic cooperation and diplomatic engagement.
The talks further touched on global geopolitical developments, with both sides reportedly calling for a multipolar world order and stronger cooperation among developing nations.
The engagement forms part of the NRM’s broader strategy to build ties with ruling political parties across Africa, Latin America and other regions as Uganda seeks to expand its international political and economic influence.
