55 Independent MPs Sign MoU with NRM, to Join Party Caucus Activities

The Government Chief Whip, Jane Ruth Aceng, has led a meeting with 55 independent Members of Parliament who have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

According to Dr. Aceng, the agreement allows the independent legislators to participate in NRM parliamentary caucus activities and work alongside the party on matters before Parliament.
However, Enoch Barata clarified that the MPs will remain independent lawmakers despite the agreement.

He explained that signing the MoU does not make them members of the NRM, but instead provides a framework for cooperation on parliamentary business while preserving their independent status.

The development is expected to strengthen collaboration between the ruling party and the group of independent MPs during the current parliamentary term.

Question: Can MPs who attend NRM caucus meetings and work with the party still be called independents?
