The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission Chairman, Dr. Tanga Odoi, has expressed satisfaction with the response to the party’s call for expressions of interest to fill two vacant positions in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
Following Monday’s announcement inviting interested party members to submit applications, the Commission received a total of 39 submissions. Out of these, 38 aspirants successfully met the nomination requirements and were cleared to proceed to the next stage.
Dr. Odoi emphasized that the nomination exercise was conducted with full transparency and in strict compliance with established party procedures. He noted that the list of nominees includes several members of the 11th Parliament who resigned their parliamentary seats to meet the legal prerequisites for participation in the EALA race.
With nominations now officially closed, the Commission will forward the list of qualified candidates to the NRM Secretary General. The Secretary General is expected to present the names to the Central Executive Committee (CEC), which will undertake vetting and voting. The final phase of the selection process will culminate in an election by the NRM Parliamentary Caucus, scheduled for Friday this week at State House Entebbe.
Despite the high number of applicants, Dr. Odoi reminded party members that only two positions are available. He encouraged those who may not be successful in this round to remain steadfast and consider future opportunities, particularly as the party looks ahead to 2027.
Addressing concerns about the status of current EALA representatives, Dr. Odoi clarified that the ongoing internal processes do not interfere with the mandates of serving members. He reaffirmed that the incumbents will continue to execute their duties until the lawful completion of their terms.
