The government has announced major changes to the 2026 National Heroes Day celebrations, with the annual event set to be held on a much smaller scale due to the ongoing Ebola outbreak and related public health measures.

Speaking to the media, Minister for the Presidency Milly Babirye Babalanda said this year's Heroes Day celebrations on June 9 will be conducted scientifically at State House Entebbe, with only 25 invited guests in attendance. Unlike previous years, there will be no public gathering.

Babalanda explained that the decision was taken to comply with strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) put in place to prevent the spread of Ebola. The government has restricted large gatherings as part of broader efforts to contain the disease.

In another significant departure from tradition, the annual awarding of medals to individuals recognized for their contribution to Uganda's development and liberation struggles has been suspended for this year's celebrations. Officials said the medal-awarding process will be conducted at a later date when conditions permit.

National Heroes Day is observed every year on June 9 to honor Ugandans who have made significant sacrifices and contributions to the country's progress. The day is usually marked by public celebrations, speeches, and the awarding of national medals to distinguished citizens.

This year's event will therefore be limited to a small official ceremony at State House, with the public encouraged to commemorate the day from their respective locations while observing health guidelines.
