Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda has temporarily suspended all online news publication as negotiations with the Ugandan government and security agencies continue over the reopening of its media outlets, including NTV Uganda, Daily Monitor, KFM, Dembe FM, Spark TV, and The EastAfrican.
The decision was announced in an internal communication to staff on Tuesday by NMG Uganda Managing Director Susan Nsibirwa, who said the company was taking the measure to reduce financial losses while operations remain suspended. She explained that with broadcast stations off air and newspapers unable to circulate, there was little value in continuing to produce online content.
According to the memo, all editorial staff have been instructed to stop publishing stories on the group's digital platforms until further notice. Journalists will instead use the period to develop in-depth and enterprise stories that can be published once operations resume. Other employees have also been encouraged to use the downtime for training and professional development. .
The suspension comes as talks to reopen the media house gain momentum. Journalist Andrew Mwenda recently said he had held discussions with Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and that leaders of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) had agreed that the Daily Monitor and NTV Uganda should be reopened after consultations with NMG management.
Another High Level engagement happened yesterday between Gen.Muhoozi Keinerugaba and the top Management (ownership) and executives of NMG at the Special Forces Command (SFC) headquarters in Entebbe to negotiate the reopening of NMG's Uganda operations.
The NMG delegation was led by NMG owner Rostam Aziz, his son Saam Aziz, and executive staff, alongside journalist Andrew Mwenda
NMG's outlets were shut down over the weekend after Gen. Muhoozi ordered the closure, with soldiers surrounding the company's premises in Kampala and preventing staff from accessing their offices. The shutdown has attracted widespread criticism from local and international media freedom advocates, while the government says the matter is part of an ongoing security investigation.
Despite the operational halt, NMG management says it remains hopeful that discussions will lead to a resolution and the eventual resumption of normal publishing and broadcasting activities.
