Just In: Nation Media Group Resumes Operations in Uganda

KAMPALA – Nation Media Group (NMG) has officially resumed operations in Uganda, ending a suspension that followed government directives issued over alleged violations of the country's broadcasting regulations.​

The media house has announced on Tuesday - today that its television, radio, print and digital services will be restored progressively as it completes the necessary operational arrangements.

"Nation Media Group Uganda is pleased to announce the resumption of its operations. Our services across television, print, radio and digital will be restored progressively as we complete the necessary operational arrangements," the company said in a statement signed by Joe Muganda, Chairman of Nation Media Group PLC.

NMG also thanked its audiences, clients and partners for their patience during the disruption and reaffirmed its commitment to delivering trusted and balanced journalism across all its platforms.

The resumption comes days after the government suspended the operations of NMG's Ugandan outlets following a directive from the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who accused the media house of publishing content considered false and harmful to the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). The suspension affected NTV Uganda, Spark TV, Dembe FM, KFM, Daily Monitor and the group's digital platforms.

In a separate statement, Taifa Group, the majority shareholder of Nation Media Group through its subsidiary, Taarifa Limited, said the resumption follows authorisation by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

The Dar es Salaam-based investment company said the decision marks an important milestone for regional investment, media development and East African integration.
Taifa Group Chairman Rostam Aziz expressed gratitude to President Museveni for authorising the resumption of NMG's operations in Uganda and also thanked Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba for his support during the engagements that led to the resolution.

"We are honoured by this decision and remain steadfast in our commitment to Uganda's socio-economic development through responsible investment, long-term partnerships and sustainable value creation," Aziz said.
He added that Taifa Group fully supports Nation Media Group's commitment to fair, balanced, independent and responsible journalism that informs, educates and contributes positively to public discourse.

The resumption paves the way for NMG's media platforms to gradually return to normal operations, bringing an end to a dispute that had temporarily taken one of East Africa's largest media organisations off the air in Uganda.
