(CNN) At least 73 people were killed Thursday night when a large truck plowed through a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, France, the Nice prosecutor's office said, according to French media.
The driver pointed his tractor-trailer into the crowd and accelerated, mowing bodies over. The driver was shot to death, authorities said. At least 100 people were injured, authorities said.

French media have identified the driver in the lorry attack on a Bastille Day crowd in Nice as a 31-year-old French-Tunisian man after some papers of his identity were found inside the truck.
The papers also indicate the man was a resident of Nice, AFP reported.
The man was shot by police after he deliberately drove at a packed street of spectators, killing at least 80 and wounding more than 100 people.
Local newspaper Nice-Matin reported the man had firearms and grenades in the lorry with him at the time of the attack.
Meanwhile, French President Francois Hollande said that the attack was clearly a terrorist assault and that the state of emergency was imposed since a previous attack on Paris last November would be extended for another three months.
US President Barack Obama too condemned the deadly attack in Nice and offered any assistance France needs to investigate the .
"On behalf of the American people, I condemn in the strongest terms what appears to be a horrific terrorist attack in Nice, France, which killed and wounded dozens of innocent civilians," Obama said in a statement.
